Career Break, where to visit?

    Hi Guys,

My girlfriend and I have decided to take a career break for three months in March 2010. We've always wanted to go travelling since leaving college but got sucked into the world of working, paying bills!

So because we can afford to take the average 1 year break and go to Australia like all good students, we have decided to pack it all in three months.

We're a bit clueless regarding how much money we'll need for the three months and where to visit?

We would like to do a bit of euro railing and then visit South America/ North Ameria or Thailand? Any tips on how much we'll need, best places to go and if it's possible to do this adventure in three months etc.

Well usually you would pick one place for three months, but you could do a month's interrailling around Europe and then head to South America (check out the very recent South America thread for info on that).
Usual ball park figure is 1000 Euro a month but if this railing is going to be France/Germany then put that up a good bit.
Also, shop around on the internet for ticket prices.

If I had three months I would go to trailfinders and buy their cheapest round the world ticket. And you can pick and chose a few destinations, you might end up spending a week in Hong Kong, week in Rio, bit of California, all depends on what ticket you chose.

It's easier to answer though if you give more details on where you'd like to go.
Personally, I've saved Europe for when I'm older and will only have a week or two off at a time. If you only have a week or two it's extremely tiring to go all the way to Argentina, so I would do that during a three month trip and save Berlin for a romantic getaway when I'm 50.

    Brilliant summary, thanks a mill

It's totally up to you though. Cause the thing I said I would chose there would involve a lot of time flying, and that might be a nightmare for you. So it all depends really.

Just to note, ive been researching round the world trips for myself and my girlfriend this coming summer too and the cheapest fares ive found were on www.roundtheworldflights.com

If you see something you like you should ring them to find out how much the airport taxes will cost on top of the tickets as it can add on quite a bit!
