Ok this might be a stupid thread but someone from here (*cough* Will *cough*) just added me on twitter and I was wondering, do you use it?

    Why?

    Why not?

I'm hooked - can't explain it but I prefer it over facebook! This could also be because its not blocked at work! :)

Love twitter makes me laugh what people are up to makes me feel in contact with the real world when i end up doing crazy 12 hour shifts

Love it. Its just such a handy way to get information. Links, jokes, news, info from friends, interacting with companies, all the rest.

I hear loads of people saying 'Twitter? If I wanted to know what people had for lunch I'd ask them' - anyone saying that isn't following the right people at all.

Or the other one 'I'd just text people if I wanted them to know something' - it's not always about what you say, but what other people say.

    Love it.

No, because no one I know is on it! Even though I seem to have 21 followers, whoever the hell they are.

Actually yeah it's also the only thing not blocked at work here too (along with boards), but I don't get it at all tbh! Sorry for sounding so silly but I don't get why you can't post other people's pages and things. Is it really just to click on a person and see if they have posted what they are up to?

Haven't found anyone interesting to "follow" yet other than David Thorne! Great time-passing links on that one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,523 ✭✭✭✭Nerin

imo twitter is only of use to people linking stuff or replacing on the fly rss.wouldn't be keen on it for sending personal messages, i wouldn't use it in place of a messenger client.

Lol - did you tweet about getting in trouble with a mod ? :D

I'm not on it myself but I do look up friends tweets every now and then. I was on facebook for a good while but disabled it. I don't know - social networking kinda feels cheap to me. Before I was on facebook people used to call or text. Since i've been off it people ask me whay i amn't on facebook anymore when i bump into them but they never call or text. Kinda makes me feel like facebook friends aren't real friends. My impression of twitter is basically - well at least it doesn't pretend to have depth like facebook does

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 737 ✭✭✭Morgase

I'm on it but I can't think of anything interesting to say on it as yet. When I find interesting links they are usually on my google reader so I just hit share there. I'm really going to have to find some interesting thing to post on it.

Also because I was a latecomer to it, my usual username is STOLEN. I hate when my name is stolen :p

i always use it,i rarely update though due to lazyness but its nice to see what people are up to

I love it! I use it more to follow others than to tweet about myself though. Must set up AgTweet on my new phone though so I can tweet in the go :D

I'm on it, barely use it, don't quite get it. I feel reluctant to follow certain people (celebrities/bands) because they just spam the main page with crap and responses and for that reason it makes me think of all the people on Facebook who I chose to hide. It's just a glorified version of that updater.

Most of my real mates don't use it so it's not terribly useful for me. I tried it for a while but mostly I'm not arsed with it. I may give it another go again in a while.

Interestingly, I've actually become much closer with acquaintances who'd use Twitter than I would have been before. I think it's because in order to get the most out of it you have to be constantly monitoring it - if you leave it for three days and come back, you'd be swamped with updates and never catch up!

It's like listening to a conversation, really. You drop in and drop out yourself, but you always have an idea of what's going on. It definitely makes me feel closer to people I would have only casually known, or rarely seen before. I know what they're getting up to and it's fantastic for spur of the moment meet-ups.

Like, if I had an hour to kill in town I wouldn't be texting everyone I know to see if they'll come for coffee - but if I tweeted about it, somebody would probably get back and go "me too, let's meet up!"

I think it has much more real-life relevance than Facebook, is what I'm saying. It does much less, much better and is ten times more useful imo.

I don't have a twitter because I'd post stupid shít on it every five minutes. Guarantee, if I signed up, my first 'tweet' would say "Well here I am guys... Putting the 'twit' in 'twitter'."

Then I'd recline in my chair and bask in my own witicism.

to a point, yes, but like rss the more you 'put into it' the more unwieldy it becomes. simply subscribing to 5 content heavy sites in rss means you'll have 150+ links to read on your reader.i've found the same with twitter

I've become somewhat addicted to twitter. I put a lot into it (9000 tweets of varying quality content) and I get quite a lot out. I've gotten jobs from it, won things like tickets on it, spoke to people I wouldn't normally have chatted to and kept in touch with people much more than I would through email or facebook

Then you have to be selective when using it the same with anything else.

That's what I mean about having to contstantly monitor it. It's not something you can log into occasionally - it's too 'present' for that. If you happen to be online all day it's incredibly useful though.

Yeah! :D If you follow the right kind of things it's super handy.

  • Moderators Posts: 51,922 ✭✭✭✭Delirium

At this stage I'd use it more than any of the other social networks. It's handy for keeping in touch with people.

Some of the news twitters also are great. Finding out about news stories as they happen.

If you can read this, you're too close!
