A whole new range of exciting and interactive entertainment possibilities
Outstanding high definition picture quality is only the start of the Blu-ray revolution; Blu-ray technology also enables a new range of exciting and interactive entertainment possibilities. If you have ever wanted to watch your favourite film with the director or lead actor explaining significant moments in the film, BonusView is your backstage pass to the world behind the silver screen.

    Picture-in-picture and Audio-Mixing Functions
The ‘Picture-in-Picture’ functionality provides a second small window which can be watched simultaneously on the screen in where, by example, actors and directors can give enhanced commentary about the scene you are watching; whilst the ‘Audio-Mixing’ function lets you choose the soundtrack you would like to listen to: the one from the content playing in the main window, the one from the small second window, or both at the same time. BonusView allows you to truly direct your own entertainment experience.

This whole new generation of bonus material is made possible through the advanced Blu-ray hardware ‘profiles’ which enable interactive functions. BonusView is the first of advanced profile, utilising 256MB local storage (used for storing audio/visual and title updates) and also secondary video and audio decoders, which is typically to allow Picture-in-Picture interactive audio and commentary.

BD liveBD-Live supporting Internet enabled content
An even more advanced profile, called BD-Live can connect to the Internet and play Blu-ray movies that have Internet-enabled content, such as interactive multiplayer games, trailers and extra features you can download from the Internet to local storage, e.g. on exchangeable memory like an SD memory card. The technology gets you the most from your movie watching. In the near future BD-Live will enable users to join in quizzes and challenge each other in super interactive games.

Panasonic Blu-ray Disc™ theater and player models are equipped with an SD Memory Card slot and USB terminal. You can immediately view motion images recorded with an HD camcorder in AVCHD format, and JPEG images taken with a digital still camera. The DMP-BD80 can also play DivX data recorded onto a USB memory device.

    Individual image slideshows
You can also create a special mood or theme by selecting some memorable music to play on your Blu-ray disc player at the same time. Use the slide show feature to present your photos to your friends and family as they sit back and enjoy your films and photos.

Capturing special occasions such as birthdays and holidays with a high resolution digital camera or HD camcorder is fun, but reliving those moments afterwards can be frustrating. People crowding around a small computer screen or pile of photos just don’t do justice to those original moments. However, thanks to Panasonic’s HD networking abilities, your family and friends can now enjoy your holiday photos and home movies on the large widescreen TV right in your living room!

    Blu-ray High Clarity Sound
Hear the details you may have been missing. Eliminating the analog video signal output prevents noise from being generated by analog video signals allows for crisp, clear sound recreation from digital sound signal.

Eliminate unwanted noise and enjoy the same true, rich sound quality from the DMP-BD80 Blu-ray disc™ player as it delivers in high-quality Blu-ray video. True to life sounds that surround you as if you were really there. Feel and hear the difference that only Panasonic Blu-ray disc™ players can deliver.

When the analogue video terminal is not being used, the electrical current that flows through the analogue video circuit can be stopped. This prevents adverse effects on the audio signals and produces an even clearer sound. The results are astounding.

The Blu-ray Disc™ theater and players feature decoders that are compatible with all of the latest 7.1-channel surround sound formats used by the Blu-ray Disc™ standard.

The 96kHz Sound Re-master function enhances the sound quality of CDs and other sources It even raises the quality of the multi-channel audio data on Blu-ray Discs™ and DVDs. By increasing the amount of sound information the Surround Re-master can produce highly realistic sounds.

The 7.1-channel analogue signal converted by the new 192kHz D/A converter is transmitted in high quality. This signal can be connected to a receiver that does not support HDMI.

    PHL Reference Chroma Plus Technology
While Panasonic Blu-ray players already produce superb picture quality, the passion it has for innovation encourages Panasonic engineers to continue bringing the very latest in cutting edge audio and visual technology together.

UniPhier is an incredible new image and audio processor, which combines P4HD technology with the proprietary Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory (PHL) Reference Chroma Plus technology, resulting in a processor that deftly handles images by reproducing colours and textures that are faithful to the original film, and offers precise digital audio processing. This brilliant new feature combines art and science to bring you the ultimate in high-end entertainment!

    P4HD Technology
To get the best high definition images from a Blu-ray disc, you need a player that renders high-quality progressive images, expresses motion smoothly, and draws sharp diagonal lines. The Panasonic-unique P4HD technology processes more than 15 billion pixels per second, generating each pixel correctly according to information obtained from up to 60 surrounding pixels, and applies the optimum processing to every pixel in the video data on the disc. The result is images with exceptional resolution.

From the Panasonic Hollywood Laboratories, research which is held in high acclaim by Hollywood professionals provides the background for the unique PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus developed by Panasonic. Here Panasonic studies and improves restoration, colour correction, compression and digital conversion, so that the unique PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus expresses the fine details and nuances of movie scenes by reproducing clearer colour boundaries, providing all the qualities that a Blu-ray disc has to offer.

Not the most aesthetically pleasing unit, looking like a Tevion DVD player, but a great entry level bd player.
Free hdmi isn't to be sniffed at and, by all accounts, the free movies are all quality transfers which should display very nicely indeed.

If I wasn't already bluray'd, I'd certainly be going for this.

    Yep, agreed.

The X-Men Quadrilogy would probably be worth between €50 - €60 alone I'd assume.

Be careful with what you say. It's not the Quadrilogy, it's the Trilogy and Origins.

Knowing some on here, they'd order it, and then start bitching at you that they didn't get the Quad! ;)

Is there a difference (besides packaging)?

    Dont think so, no.

But I don't think you'd squeeze Origins into the Trilogy box with the others!

actually picked one of these up in powercity over the weekend got their price down to €229 (just didn't want the hassle of getting it back to amazon if anything was wrong with it) anyway I've ordered an 8 pin chip to stick into it to make it region free for both DVD's and Blue-rays for €54 off ebay. Nice player watched the new startrek on it over the weekend and found it gave a fantastic picture, it's a bit slow loading up compared to the PS3 but that doesn't worry me to much.

Just wondering on how to claim the 7 free BD's as it states send a cheque (i take it an irish cheque is no good ) or a postal order (are irish postal orders ok?) for 4 euros made payable to Panasonic UK, anyone know what to do?

Mind posting a link for a similar chip? I'd only be interested in one of these if I could make it region free.

I bought the Panasonic BD60 in July, great player. Only complaint (and it is minor) is the slow boot/loading time. Anyway there were 2 free Blu-Ray discs back then and I sent an Irish PO payable to Panasonic UK. The discs arrived with no problems.

Also there is an IR code to unlock playing any region DVD if you do a bit of digging. This only works for DVDs, you still need a chip to play any region of Blu-Ray discs. Are discs really that much cheaper in US than UK when you take into account shipping and customs that it's worth it?

It's not always about the money.

Most of the time, the US gets bd releases a few weeks/months before us on this side of the pond. They also seem to get a fair few more steelbooks and special editions than us.
So regardless of price, people like to have the Limited Edition version of things, and are willing to pay for the privilege.

Dont mean to hijack this thread, but seem as were on about amazon i have a quick question for basquille;)

I was looking to buy the Sony BDP-S760 on Amazon and its advertised at £327.90, now when i go to checkout the price goes up to £346.90.

I also checked the Pana and its the same, advertised at £155.10, then at checkout it goes up to £163.87.........has this increase got something to do with the VAT at Irish rates????

I've never ordered electronics from Amazon only BluRay's.......

Yes you are right the VAT gets added on, for delivery to Ireland only way around it is if you know someone up north and get it shipped to them you will only pay UK vat rate.

Well you get region locked titles that have still to come out here like Crank or say UP which is $19.99 on amazon shipping is $6.47 total $26.47 which converts approx €18.25 so when it does come out here in a month or two it will cost probably in the region of €22-€25, so thats not a bad savings it even works out cheaper if you ship two titles problem is you might get hit with customs I think the limit is €22.
Fight Club for example shipped from Amazon.com including shipping is €15.99 I also see its region free :)

Axel Music who import US Blu-Rays charge the following including shipping for the same titles

Fight Club €19.97 from Axel and the UK version on Play costs €19.49 compared with Amazon's 15.99
UP costs 27.96 from Axel compared to €18.25 from Amazon

Nice one Snake, that clears that one up then.....

Think i'll wait till January might get it for £299 in the sales:D.....have a Sony BDP-S350 and PS3 so in no hurry, but this (Sony BDP-S760) is supposed to be the business

So I got the chip in the post and set about chipping my BD60, Opened up my BD60 which was easy enough, the chip your soldering onto is pretty small so be warned you need a very fine tipped low powered soldering iron, if your going to attempt it practise soldering on a chip of the same size on some broken circuit board you might have lying around, So you get the chip and CD with the PDF instuctions on it and some wire to use, I have found in the past that the easiest way to solder these wires onto a small chip leg is first thin the wire ends with solder, easiest way to do this is get some old piece of metal to use and melt solder until you have a small ball of it you then keep this ball heated and put the wire through it do this for both ends of the length of wire, you then place the wire on the leg of the the chip on the board and heat the top of the wire for a couple of seconds, the thinned wire should stick to the leg of the chip and solder the other end to the mod chip, I think it's 6 wires u need to solder, take your time at it, when your finished cover the mod chip in electical tape and stick it to the board, there is space on the pcb to do this.

I put mine back together and powered it up to check that it was still working and it was I put a Region A version of The Prestige in and I got the wrong Region warning. So as per the instructions I put the player into standby and pressed "1" for Region A, powered it back up and the movie started playing fine :)

is there any point getting a blu-ray player if you tv doesn't have a HDMI connection?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Probably not, unless you happen to have a tv from about 3 years ago whcih has a HD resolution but no hdmi, just compnent connection, in that case it may be, if the set is big enough

In all other cases i would aay no, you aint gonna see any difference over a dvd on just a CRT screen! No hurry to go to blu-ray either, DVD will be around for a long time yet...

I have a 4 year old LG 32" LCD. Think it is HD compatible. Might wait till I get the a new TV for the Blu Ray then. It won't be long as I am dying to get Sky HD in!

Although I would say I just watched my first upscaled DVD on my 32'' HD LCD and the difference from component (480p) was rather huge.

When did you send off for them? I did it a week before the deal closed at the end of February so not expecting them until sometime in April if at all.

I sent off on the 16th December! Would at least have expected some form of response by now. I emailed them yesterday but no reply yet. I'll keep you posted.
