    Good to hear.. :)

But why do you need / want a written invitation from the government as well?

but this is me unfortunatly a lot of people dont have that sort of consideration to come down and help people and just dont really give a flying $£%£..

so my point being that the governement should be doing things like this to tackle the problems

Thats what I was wondering. Why not have able bodied doleians (say, on the dole more than 3 months) doing work to improve towns and communities etc. With Fridays off to fire out some CVs.

I know there are people who are on the dole and seriously hate it, so surely improving your town would be better than doing nothing?

And those who are on the dole by choice; it'd give them a kick up the hole!

Disclaimer: I've given no thought to the practical implementation of this idea.

I mean if you wanna do something go down with a bucket or whatever. We probably don't have any specific organizations like some other countries do as we are not prone to natural disasters.

I know in Germany they have regulations on actually doing stuff for the country or your own health if your on the Dole. From what I've heard, it's something like 4 hours community service a week and 2 hour long visits to a government ran gym to maintain your health. Don't these, you don't get your Dole.

AFAIK disaster management like this is left up to the local area anyway.
Ireland doesn't have a centralised country wide system to deal with this stuff.

Besides.. I think they should spend the money on floodproofing instead of wasting i on more pointless bearucratic crap.

They already have initiatives like that, ie the FAS CE scheme.. but for some reason only a tiny percentage are offered places

Join the civil defence or the army, they're all over this disaster.

(There may also be some upcoming vacancies in the ESB... shhh!)

Clearly the disaster here is the school the OP went to at an early age. They didn't even teach English to him :(

EDIT: With hindsight (great schtuff) that was fair harsh. See below post.

Don't you have to apply for a place on that? I think it should be mandatory, no 'offer' just an 'order'.

Given that the person is fit to work.

As an employed person paying tax I would be very happy to pay the government to hire coaches to facilitate you coming down to help clean up Cork. In addition to paying for the coaches I'd add that it would probably be Bus Eireann that they use, ensuring that it would be expensive and the money would go straight back to the government and also while you're down here why not get a free dinner out of them too, and accommodation in case it takes more than a day to clean up. Better pay for insurance in case you injure yourself on the job too. Also they'd better buy equipment so you can do it properly.

    /SARCASM

Why not let people clean up their own houses?

Why not let the council deal with the damage to civic property (bridges, walls etc.) ? What the **** are we paying them for otherwise.

Maybe not everyone is able or fit to do so? Maybe they're already doing so but could use some help? Maybe there are a lot of people who simply can't afford to pay to have the work done?

The council should indeed be dealing with the professional aspect of things, esp. civil engineering issues or places where plant machinery is required...but that's not to say that a few hundred spare pairs of hands for the more mundane crap like sweeping streets, filling skips and bailing out standing water wouldn't go astray...instead leaving the paid work to those tasked with doing it.

OP: I thought the exact same thing last night (not on the dole but at a loose end)...I could feasibly drive down and get stuck in...but in reality, where would I lay my head overnight, who do I go and ask what needs done, and a whole host of other practicalities. The sarcastic bit in the post above is more accurate than it lets on.

On the wider issue you raise about having to volunteer community work for your dole entitlement, it's definitely something that should be looked into...having the guts of half a million people sitting on their hands for 200 quid a week when there is so much that needs doing all over the country doesn't make much sense. It'll probably never happen though...

How is it not a natural disaster. Have you seen the floods at all? People have lost their houses, business etc...
