Folks anyone run the above XC last year. I am wondering which to wear, a pair of spikes or old runners . The report from last year was the going was soft with a nice and cold water feature up to the knees. Any suggestions?

I don't think that after the last week there's a cross country course anywhere in Ireland that you'd get away with old runners on. Spikes all the way.

I know what your saying there but going on last years course spikes didnt help at all, unless you could get 30 mm spikes :). It was more of a mud race then XC so i'd hate to think what the course woudl be like this year, and the river must be deeper too :)

Did this last year. It was a ploughed field with very heavy mud which stuck to your feet. The water 'feature' was a stream about knee deep, which was welcome as it washed the mud off your feet. I'd wear spikes with the longest nibs you can find.
And don't forget to bring a 'full' change of clothes.;)

If the video posted above is the one I've seen before, then you'll see that the one person going through wearing runners is the one person who ends up on his back.

Last years run was a world of pain, spikes or no spikes.

I'm on that video somewhere, looking very forlorn.

Just bring along your worst pair of wellies or maybe a set of waders might be suitable! :D

Did this last year and enjoyed (hated it as well) it in a funny kind of way. Haven't had as much fun in the mud in a long time. Swore I wouldn't do it again but ah well maybe I will, as it is bound to be worse this year.

The river crossing was great and the video of it shown afterwards was very entertaining. It's different and the cross country purists might not like it but it's woth a try.

I ran the course there on Sunday in runners, no way could you race in them, football boots would be fine or spikes, its very mucky and soft in places, and some nice water, tough course but looks like a cracking race track!

Heres the main part of the men's loop http://connect.garmin.com/activity/19439066

    Course news:
Some muddy patches and the same river crossing as last year. However, there are plenty of grass sections this year where you can let rip.:)
