Trail runners - waterproof or not?

    Hi all,

Am thinking of doing something like Gaelforce next year and would like some opinions on whether to go for a waterproof or regular trail runner. I'm looking at the Salomon range, and dunno whether to go for one of the Gore tex varieties or the lighter (non-waterproof) type... I know that once you step into a puddle / stream that is above ankle height that your shoe will fill with water anyway and wearing a goretex shoe will only keep the water in. On the other hand - a breathable runner will be much better at letting water out. Perhaps, though, a waterproof version offers better protection for the feet on a year round and multi-surface basis?

I would appreciate some informed opinion...

Stay away from waterproof shoes - afraid of water? :)

Main reason is becuase waterproof shoes are particularly effective at keeping water in! So if you go into water over top of shoes you're guaranteed to be running in water for rest of day. You're much better off the have socks & shoes that don't hold water and dry quickly. Waterproof shoes also tend to be very heavy which is another good reason to stay away ...

I have adventure raced with people with waterproof shoes and they're ended up cutting holes in shoes to let water out - that says it all

I went for waterproof but regret it now.
As bazman said they are pretty good at holding water in.
