    Hey guys,
A friend of mine owes about €240 in parking tickets. He can't afford to pay it. His court date is today. What is likely to happen?

He can show up and plead his case to the judge,

the judge might convict and give a time period to pay e.g. 90 days, and a period of detention in default e.g.15 days in default.

Judges however tend to take the view that if you can afford to drive, you can afford to pay fines.

He's likely to be given time to pay the fines with a default period of detention as noted by Gabhain.

If the judge insists on payment 'forthwith' he should ask for recognisances to be fixed in order to appeal - lodging the appeal will stay any order on the entry of recognisances, pending appeal, which will give him a further period of time in which to get the money together.

edit : apparently he was in court yesterday - hopefully it went well.
