    Hi,

I dont know if im posting this in the right place.

My GF and i decided to get some prints of Antique Irish maps and antique world maps to decorate our new house.

We looked online and were very shocked by how expensive they are. How can prints be so expensive? Are the rights to old maps copyrighted or can they be copied?

Not sure about the (C) or anything but its cheaper to find the maps them selves and take a photograph (if allowed) and make your own prints. Most county Libraries have there own set of the 1839 OSi so depending which county you are in they might have others aswell. Which County are you looking for? or just anywhere cause then county libraries are your best bet.

I don't have the link but I came across a site about a year ago which sells original maps of the british isles and Europe (with or without frames)

What put me off buying them was discovering that they were literally ripping/slicing the pages out of map books from the 19th century and selling them at exorbitant prices as individual prints.

They do that with everything Morlar, not just maps, but books with engraving, newspapers, mags etc. It would be cheaper for the OP to buy a map book and tear out the pages, you can find French made map books at reasonable prices.

It is also a practice with WW1 & WW2 photo albums where they sell them off picture by picture or sometimes page by page to try to make some more money. Not the sort of thing I would agree with.

I agree, I hate seeing one person or one family's history getting scattered around like that.

Its unfortunate that the indivdual engravings are worth more than the books as a whole this is why ive been told that the german engraving books i have should be split up to triple the money which is ridiculus but there you go.

Well I can understand why they are so expensive if they are "prints" ,theres a big difference between a "coloured reproduction" and a print.

the art of the print was in the making of the plate , which was naturally limited , with only a certain number of impressions before the plate was blunt.

maps are popular subjects as far as things go. they'll never go out of fashion , and interesting when they show irregular country shapes .

they can go really cheaply at auction too .
I got this one cheap about 14 years ago .
    25 punts.....
and whats interesting at the back , you can see it has simple hand clip opening system for the frame .

The reason for this was that there once was an added tax for a dealer to sell "framed maps" .
And thus when you bought a map from a dealer , he would hand you the map and a frame seperate .

good luck with your collecting OP .
