Best option for laptop

Just wondering if I need to upgrade my laptop to get the performance I need. Only really use it for internet browsing, email, MS Office. Nothing heavy duty. The current one is extremely slow in comparison to any other machine I have used with the same broadband connection.

Bought about 2 years ago, its a Compaq Presario V3000, Core duo processor 1.86GHz, 1GB Ram.
    Windows Vista home premium.

A friend suggested that installing Norton antivirus uses a lot of processer capacity and therefore slows down the laptop but not sure about this.

Does this sound like it should be able to meet my computing needs? Its getting frustrating to do anything as is quite slow.

Is it something a service could fix and if not what is most important consideration for new laptop (RAM v processor speed etc.)

No need for norton its a resource hog better off with avg free or microsoft security essentials.
    Upgrade the ram to 2gb.
Turn off superfetch and windows search.

Whoever advised you about Norton was right, it's bloated and not a particularly good antivirus, and won't help with your performance issues.

I'm assuming you haven't reinstalled Windows since you got the machine. Windows tends to accrue a lot of unused data/configurations if left to it's own devices. Without reinstalling Windows, I'd recommend running a full hard-drive defrag (My Computer > Right click on hard drive > Properties > Tools > Defragment Now) and maybe running a Registry Defragmenter/Cleaner. I'm not sure what good, free ones there are at the moment so maybe check the Free software stickied thread in Computers & Technology.

Of course, if you're able for it, or you can get a friend to do it for you a full reinstallation of Windows will probably give the most benefit (just remember to copy your user data to a seperate harddrive/partition.

edit: ^^ Seconding using AVG Free.
