help with PGDE application form - Applied Maths / Maths

Seems that I am one of the many people about to apply got the PGDE.

My degree is Electronic Eng, and for this degree the teaching council raifies for Applied Maths and Computer Studies.

For the applications I have to state the "teaching subject" - which leaving certificate examination subject do you intend to be your main teaching subject ?

As far as I know there is no Computer Studies Leaving Cert examination subject. If I put down Applied Maths, does this mean that:
    1) I will not be accepted as there is no Applied Maths pedagogy subject in TCD or NUI

    or

    2) I will be allowed to take the Maths pedagogy subject in lieu of Applied Maths

If I put down Mathematics, then does this mean that:
    3) the application will be thrown out as my degree is not ratified to teach Mathematics

    or

    4) I will be able to take the Maths pedagogy subject but can only teach Applied Maths

Also, I did my degree in 2 parts - the first 3 years in an IT (Diploma) and years 3 and 4 in UL:
    5) Does the TC have any problem with this kind of route ? Like would I have to get the diploma examined by the TC ? Or could they actually dismiss the whole lot ?

    6) Anyone else gone through this kind of route before doing the dip ? Could it be possible that the diploma could add maths to my list ?

    7) Also, anyone know if some maths modules (credits) could be taken to add maths to my repertoire, or am I limited to what my primary degree can offer ?

If anyone has any insight into some of this, then that would be great. Sorry about all the questions - I'm a bit reluctant to talk to the TC with all the bad stories, and have to fork out 270 odd quid and still have to wait ages.

    Cheers, thanks for reading...

On the face of it I would say you would have problems making an argument to get into the PGDE. I know you want to avoid this but the TC would be the best ones to advise you on picking up extra credits. I 'd imagine there's a good chance you could do that.

"Could it be possible that the diploma could add maths to my list?" - The answer to this is "no". You are not taught a subject per se in the Dip only some teaching methods associated with it, so it makes no difference to your qualifications to teach it that you take it as a methodology subject.

In fact you wouldn't even be asked at a job interview what your methodolgy subjects were in the Dip. Your primary degree is what will determine what you are qualified to teach.

Well, as I've been ranting about lately, I've a degree in electrical engineering, which was ratified for maths and applied maths, and the teaching council is trying to claim otherwise now, the year after I did my dip. I will keep ye posted on how that ****storm blows out...

The subject methodologies aren't really that important. They don't qualify you in any real, legal, way for teaching a subject. There isn't any applied maths subject methodologies, afaik, so AM teacher-wannabes just sign up for the maths ones.

Sorry to be negative at this point now, but are you really sure about what you're going to be doing? AM and CS are minority subjects - statistically, your chances of employment will be low, low, low.
