Hi all, first time here , good bike forum indeed.

Just a quick one on the Allez models , from what cycleways site tells me , theres bugger all difference between the Allez 16 and 24 ( ehh no difference! except 649 / 688 quid ) and the Sport 18 and 27 ( 779 / 819 quid.)

Surely there is a difference for the 30 and 40 quid?

Difference between the 16/18 and the Sport is 8-speed Shimano shifters vs Sora 9-speed shifters respectively - are they worth 130 quid?

    thanks for any help.

ill look on the spezialised site ... should have done before i posted....

Well the Sora group set is nicely better than the 8 speed, have ridden both and think there is a diff and i would think it's worth it.

So your next question is the 18 v 27 gears this all depends on how fit a cyclist you are and what you are going to be using the bike for. If you are going near hills and are not an experienced cyclist you will need a least a compact (the bike shop will know what this is and it would be mean having 18 gears but you won't be going to fast at the higher end) if you go for the 27 it gives you a much large range to choose from and if you come to any steep hills up won't have an issue as you will have enough gears to choose from, the down side is the bike will be slightly heavier.

If you are not fit and this is for the odd weekend spin in wicklow then a triple (27) is prob your best bet although if you don't see yourself going near hills the 18 will be fine.

    Hope that helps somewhat!

My very first roadbike was a Specialized Allez with Sora shifters and I loved it. I would thoroughly recommend it, would also recommend the 3-ring to start (27), at least until you get the legs for the hills.

I have the Allez 2009 with Sora shifters and a double chainset. I'm enormously pleased with it so far(I was a bit annoyed with the front derailleur until I got it set up properly). I haven't done anything more difficult than you'll find in Wicklow but haven't really missed more gears tbh.
