with the problems with Li Ion batteries, I'd be weary buying third party non branded batteries, you may regret it.

Open System Profiler, look at Power and check the cycle count of your battery. If its more than 100-200 then you can be certain that's your problem.

I bought a battery from this ebay seller recently: http://cgi.ebay.ie/Genuine-Apple-Macbook-Pro-15-Battery-Grade-A-0-20_W0QQitemZ190330982064QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Apple_Mac_Accessories?hash=item2c509c4eb0

It was used but the cycle count was only 10, and it's made by Apple. Happy out with it.

    Well then, I did that.

    Cycle Count - 210
    Condition - Check Battery

So does that basically just mean the battery is worn out? I take it using a knackered battery does not materially affect my MBP, other than the hassle of having to charge often? You reckon I would notice considerable difference with a brand new battery?

    Yes, pretty much

    Correct

You could extend your battery life up to 4-5 hours.

If you do get a new battery, try to calibrate it once every now and again to make sure it operates efficiently: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490

Thanks for the good advice. Seems a new battery will have to be added to the ever growing "need to buy" list. It's just a pain in the arse. I'd hardly have the power to go for a coffee for an hour or two without running out of power.

I'll have to check out a few reputable ebay sellers for a decent replacement battery. Just ain't got the cash for a new battery direct from Apple at the moment.
