Yeah, as much as I want one, I cannot afford €300 for it :( Looks like it's gonna be a 5750 or 5770 for me :(

That's some hell of a price jump :(

I like scan myself, i really do. Until you try to rma something with them. My x1950pro and opty 165 failed about 2 months and then 4 months after(for the cpu) i was waiting over 6 months for a replacement of the x1950, and was given a 9500pro(Awesome indeed, if it was 2 years earlier). and for the opty i was refunded 12 quid. Never got my money back as they ignored my mails, phonecalls and letter by registered post.

****ty company, nice prices, bad RMA/Returns department.

    Remember price/supply/demand.

They were. But ATI hiked the price themselves by $50 per chip. And now everyone from the manufacturers, suppliers and retailer will add a bit on themselves to maintain their margins in response to this. ATI are exploiting the popularity of the 5850 to increase profits in the face of falling revenue from the supply shortage.

I just didn't realise that the price had gone up by that much!

    whamy

Is it only 5850 prices that are effected or will the 5870's get the hike as well I wonder?

I haven't seen any mention of the 5870's getting a price hike just the 5850's.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

it's just the 5850s that ATI have placed the price increase on. However, I'm sure a few suppliers will try to exploit general customer confusion for their own gain too.

they'll be down at 180euro in april/may when the mid range furmi( lol ) cards are released( unless its a dud which it could be ).

Im going to crossfire my 5850 if DX11 performance is junk.

Thats a bit of a price hike alright, got mine from Overclockers UK, placed it on pre-order and was lucky enough to be one of the first batch shipped so was happy out, came with DiRT2 steam key as well, although god only knows when the game will actually be released.. Still the 5850 is a beast of a card, COD:MW2 looks the fantastic on it, all settings max @ 1920x1200.
Its a fantastic card but not at the €300 mark....would take some jusitification!

yeah, they did say that in august though that it wouldnt be out till december, tbh there doesnt seem to be much of a difference other than the water, crowds and lighting at night, heres a comparison - http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,699998/Dirt-2-DirectX-9-vs-DirectX-11-graphics-compared/Practice/
Theyre going to do benchies soo which will be very very interesting, i reckon it will run like crap in DX11, usually all hype followed by total disappointment.

yeah the news somehow made it past me. Hopefully the game should be somewhat decent, and not a 20gb download :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

It actually looks pretty weak, I've seen DX10 games look much much better. It looks a pretty awful showcase of DX11 tbh.

lol, oh yeah forgot its a steam voucher there for a second, yeah the latest games are far too big to download here with our crap connections.

I have the demo on my PS3, havnt tried it and i dont really like playing racers on the PS3 as i prefer using my logitech momo and getting better gfx/fps on the pc.

I've always been wary of those steering wheel jobies. I got the one for the 360 and it sucks some major ballsack, not sure if i want to risk 300 quid one something i cant use :(

i picked up mine for 50 euro second hand, i had a total POS for the PS2, but the momo is brilliant, pedels are heavy and doesnt slide around, steering is solid with strong mounts for the desk and the force feedback and weight turning the wheel is amazing, takes a bit of getting used to but it really is fantastically immersive.

I wouldnt spend over 100euro on one myself if id never used something semi decent hence my buy, but i would easily buy a G25 now if my existing wheel broke.

spot on the money there MR Russ

i had one ordered when it was due in 5-7 days
it was due in stock today
but now its due in 3-4WEEKS! and my order status is still "awaiting stock"
so whatever they got in... they sent out.. and didnt send me one:mad:

and my new case just arrived today and everything else will arrive this week....

i cant wait a MONTH for a gfx card :(
now i dont know what to do.....

if that's dabs c-note I think you should still be able to go into your account online and cancel the order, that was one of my favourite features that cancelling was a straightforward process.

As per the bargain thread, Sapphire 5850 is in stock at pixmania for e270, with an additional 5% off until the 26th, so €256+delivery.

yup its dabs, i'm thinking of cancelling... but first want to be sure i can get one in better time (no point cancelling if i'm gonna be waiting 3-4 weeks anyway)
thanks for the pixmania tip off, i'll check that out ;)

In the same boat with Dabs. Was expecting this to happen anyway. So will go with the sapphire on pixmania thanks for that link.

I've been also thinking about getting two 5770's instead as it cheaper.I presumes its overkill tho untill i get a better monitor.
I'm using a 22" with 1600x1200 native res at the moment.

Thats a good res to play games at.
Im running 2x5750 at 1680x1050 and its plenty for me.
But pixamaina have now 5770 for 120 each not sure how much postage. But that is a good buy.

Am I the only one thinking that the 5850 pricing is so inflated as to negate any point in buying the card whatsoever? You can get a vapor-x 4890 which is about 10-15% slower for more then a hundred cheaper, madness. Playing at 1920x1200 I was looking at this series of cards for an upgrade, the 5850 being completely pointless in my opinion from a pure current gaming perspective (why bother looking to the future with performance cards, there's only so long they remain performance cards), and the 5870 would require me to lay down about 200 extra quid! No thanks....

Agree totally. I'd been shot down previously in this forum for suggesting the 4890 is the better buy but the new price increases confirm that. It's been said time and time again that this is merely ATI manipulating the market to get the highest margins in the face of dwindling stock. And considering they've put an end to the possibility of a Vapor-X 5850 (which everyone knows would sell like hotcakes) it's obvious they were concerned about the performance of the 5870. Seems they made the same mistake Nvidia have been making for the past year or two, thinking the market will happily pay stupid prices just because it's the fastest thing on the market.

Their conservatism will kick in again prior to Fermi's launch I'd imagine, but for now either grin and bear it or stick with DX10. And considering how few DX11 games there are line-up I know which makes more sense right now for me.

Yup, it's one of the reason I am waiting for Fermi to come before snapping up TWO 5850's for €300 ;)

Definately, well maybe not a year :( TBH I'm half thinking my next upgrade will be a second 4870 1gb. I really don't need it right now even though i play at 1080, as i don't play crysis lol

When the 4870 1gb goes under 100 i'll get one, or i might just get one second hand... Not sure yet
