Waveguide coupling

I've been staring at this problem of an unbalanced coupler and my eyes are bleeding. It has 2 different channel step index waveguides of the same thickness but different widths. Both cores have the same refractive index and everything else is cladding of Nclad = 1.45 , Ncore = 1.455.

The suggested steps have it being reduced using Effective Index, find propagation constants.

With the end goal being the coupling length and efficency of power transfer at lambda = 1.550 um.

What I'm not really understanding is how the unbalanced part affects using the EIM, I previously have only taken EIM of a Substrate | Core | Substrate form. Would I need to take EIM of one core then the other then EIM of both since their widths are different, or can I just take EIM of both simultaneously (I have a sneaking suspiscion that this doesn't work).

If there's another better way, please feel free to suggest it. About to throw the book out the window.
