    Hi Guys,

Just looking for some quick advice , brought my ford focus for nct and it all passed except for the centre brake light at rear. I got 5 replacement bulbs and replaced them in centre unit but have the following problem...when 1 bulb is IN it seems bright,,,then i put second 1 in and it gets dimmer, and again the next 1 gets dimmer again...when all 5 are in it is barely visible. I know if i bring back to NCT it will fail again just for this, the guy who gave me the bulbs in the motor factors reckons they are right type 12v 5w written on them...anyone any ideas before I bring it back to the garage:mad:.

sounds like a bad connection going to the center mounted brake light. It could either be on the + or the - side of the brake light, so need to check both. It could be as simple as a corroded ground.

I'm assuming this is a hatch back, but i'm not sure how the wiring is brought onto the boot lid, but this is the first place i would check.

A centre break light is not required for the NCT anyways so if you remove it altogether they cannot fail you.

You sure? If it is not required for the NCT then why would they fail the OP for that very thing?

I think that if a 3rd brake light is provided, it must work.

I wouldnt go pulling out the light. Get lower rated bulbs or just put 2 of them into the light unit & it would work ok.

The NCT testers manual says ...
Additional stop lamps (other than those fitted by the vehicle manufacturer) are not part of the test

... so, of they're factory fitted they must work. Haven't they been a requirement at EU level for a while now?

Wikipedia says 1998, my car's from May '98 and doesn't have one but it may have come into force later in the year. I don't think I've seen a Focus without a high level brake light, and IIRC they were launched in late '98.
