This is on my birthday! I don't know if I could suffer that much on my birthday. Still it would be a good excuse to eat cakes afterwards.

    Oh.......

1st 10KM in Dec, i wonder would i be ready for this ?????????

It says on the Website for this race that all iPods and MP3s are baned for safety reasons etc etc ... how strict do you think they'll actually be on the day?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,197 ✭✭✭elvis jones

With that reasoning those who are hard of hearing and deaf will not be allowed either:rolleyes:

Sorry i'm a newbie but the motivational benefits of music during exercise are well known.

    Tiny silly rant over:o

I just signed up this morning, and only then noticed the no ipod rule! I'm not so confident now, as I only ever run without ipod during Winter League which is 4 miles - I always use it during longer runs. Don't know how I'll manage 10 miles with just me and the voice in my head

I'm going to have to HTFU!

In all seriousness about the Dungarvan race ... do you think they'll be turfing people out of this race if you turn up with an iPod?

Has anyone ever been thrown out of a race / disqualified for having an iPod on? (I've read of the marathon winners who have, but I mean for those of us who would be finishing in the middle of the pack!)

No,i have not and i dont see the harm in wearing them.
I wear mine most of the time training and i am fully aware of ahats going on around me,always being careful at junctions and cars coming out of estates, houses etc
You would think there is less need to be careful in races with all the marshals there for you...but i suppose its an insurance thing and if one person gets knocked down that could be the end of all races in the area...

I do know that for some BHAA races in Cork last year that when the ban on the use of MP3 players was blatantly ignored, the results posted on the web listed the result time for "headphone-wearer" rather that the participants name.

I have ran this race twice (07 and 08) and you could enter on the day both times. Have they changed it to just online entry now?

Hi, what is the course like? Is it very hilly? I did the 10K run back in October and enjoyed it. Sorry for the questions, it's just I don't know Dungarvan that well :o.

    The course is fair.
There are some hills (Mile 8 to 9 in particlar :(), but there are some downhill sections too (mile 6 :)).
Overall it is a flat course.

    Thanks eliwallach ;)

Did you do the 10K back in October? Is this part of the 10 mile course? The hill at mile 8-9, is that the road coming into Dungarvan, from the Cork side?

    'Deed and tis.
I have driven it hundreds of times but it's full impact can only be experienced by running it.

Signed up for this one today...closing date this Sunday. Looking forward to this race. I ran once in Dungarvan before...ran a stop sign to be precise in the latter stages of my driving test :(

    Ditto.
Although the cost is €22 online and not (the much publicised) €20.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,656 ✭✭✭village runner

even at 22 euro its the best value race of the year. Last yr the grub after it was a feast. After running 15 miles on the day i put up quite a bit of weight. Brack was awesome.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,659 ✭✭✭tisnotover

entered as well and def looking forward to this one after mallow being cancelled!
mile 8-9 has a decent climb alrite, but apart from that think its a fair course.

+1 on grub and the long-sleeve from last year was class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭RubyK

One more question - does it start and finish at the same place? It's just at the 10K back in October, it started up from the Park Hotel, but finished at the IDA.

It's no big deal, just wondering.

    Based on last year's course.
The start and finish are within 400 meters of each other.
And the start is within 400 meters of the registration centre.
NB - make sure to be facing the correct direction when that gun goes off ;).

Where exactly is the Sports centre, that it's starting from :o Don't know Dungarvan well at all, only ever drive through it on the way to Cork.

And what direction will it go in? Is there a course route online, do you know?

Jebas, I promise, no more questions :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,395 ✭✭✭eliwallach

    Hi-carumba Ruby, you've more questions that a 6-year-old-girl!!

All will become apparent on race day.
Dungarvan ain't that big, so finding the Sports Centre won't be hard.

For now I'll refer you to the race website:

    Hi RubyK,
    the route is here,
there'll be plenty of signposts for registration and eliwallach is right, it's a small town and there'll be nothing but runners around all morning, you'll find it easy enough.

is there a steep hill up as you turn off the cork road from mile 2-3 ??

There is a little rise over 50-100m as you turn off the main road, then a gradual rise for the next km.

Long term forecast is for cold (northerly winds) but dry weather. Like last year. Except dem wor easterlies last year.

    I got the following long range forecast.....Sunday: Partly Cloudy. High: 8 °C . Wind WNW 32 km/h .

I make that running into a hefty wind from 3.25 to 5.3 miles and with the wind 5.3 to 8.25 miles. Last 2 miles will be a crosswind which will be more hindrance than help. But overall I'd say tough first half, easier second half, certainly nice to have the wind from miles 5 to 8.

Got my number in the post yesterday....really looking forward to this one, haven't raced since september!

    Just thinking,

With the race numbers/chips having been posted to the participants, will there be any need to go to the race headquarters before the race?
Of course if you need to change into racing gear, you will need to, but I presume there will be no further registering (roll-call)?
It will, of course, be necessary to call there after the race for tea, bikkies & cake.

+1 You and your boards AC singlet are the meeting point. If I don't see you before the race, I'll be hanging around the finish line just after 2pm but latest 2:03pm. However, I won't be hanging around there too long as since Village Runner is aiming to hit the cakes before 2pm there may be none left by the time we get there!

Ah Jayz lads, leave some cakes for those of us aiming for around to finish around 2:25pm please !!! (Or have we had enough cakes already and that's why we're finishing at that time?!!) :o

+1 on the leaving some cakes for those finishing later

I've eaten so much over the last month that I consider myself an expert now and feel I should go and do a lot of cake judging :D
