Im thinking about going to waterford next year to do criminal justice. Im from wicklow and would have to move down there. As this would be an expensive and life changing decision i would be grateful if anyone could give me any information on the course, how tough it is, worth doing, do they enjoy etc... many thanks

    Hi,

The course is not really that tough, however, it is very broad, 4 wide strands; law, sociology/criminology, business and research, you also cover a bit of psychology, ethics . In the end your not really qualified to do anything but you do have a wide knowledge in a lot of areas. Its just not specific enough to get a job in one particular area. Your not a criminologist, etc at the end of it. I know disappointing isn't it.

If there is one of these areas that you particularly like, I would recommend that you stick to a course in that particular area; having said that you will learn an awful lot on this course and bar one I found the lecturers to be really lovely and even the one who wasn't was very fair when marking exams.

If you decided to study law or sociology I think you can do a masters in Criminology in DIT or UCC and it only takes a year - if I was starting again this is the option I would have chosen because you end up with two things and its suppposedly much easier.
    Hope this helps

If you are thinking of joining the Gardai, this course is the ideal choice, but apart from that its really just a very broad arts course. It does allow you to take a masters some law and sociology courses. Sociology in WIT, Criminology in both UCC and DIT and Human Rights in UL seemed to be the most popular choice for the first graduates of CJS.

You can also have grinds in Griffith College or Independent Colleges (home study) takes about 3 months, this allows you to sit your FE1's
