Interesting article: http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2009/11/17/huffman-already-in-place-on-freesat/ about Sat4Free, I wonder would this affect viewability of satellite here.

No this won't affect satellite viewing here as the receiver doesn't know where you are, also its already in place on freesat, they are talking about it being used on the freeviewHD platform.

From my reading of that article, it's garbage. It's not an "exclusive" revelation that the EPG data is compressed using Huffman tables - it has been known for ages, particularly by the enthusiasts on the web who reverse engineered the tables. Hence the availability of the Freesat EPG on Dreamboxes and other 3rd party receivers.

The article also seems to suggest that some sort of Huffman Coporation exists which licences the compression technology. There isn't as Huffman never patented his invention. The statement that "Huffman was indirectly responsible for the closure of Sat4Free, which attempted a Freesat-like service in the Irish Republic" is more rubbish.

On the broader issue, the article is also out of date, as Ofcom have already ruled out the "soft encryption" of EPG data on Freeview.

And I don't know what relevance any of this has to a thread on listing DTT/Sat Combo boxes - it should be moved to a thread of its own.
