    Yes.

    Mind your toes. :)

Seriously, I use them, I like them, they work well for what I want to achieve, and are cheaper to own than a set of regular weights.

Yes I use them. I think cannabis should be legalised, that the way we do business with the third world should be examined and that NAMA will be a success.

I just got a load of them from http://www.irish-lifting.com/. I bought them for fun really rather than thinking they are some magical piece of equipment. I've only done snatches & swings up till now so I'm going to nerd out on them over Christmas learning all the other various lifts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,407 ✭✭✭✭justsomebloke

have some work well if you have the weight you need but find them restrictive unless you have a full set and even then the jumps in weights can be annoying. Prefer an proper oly set and dumbell handles myself

Not sure about retailers around Derry, but these folks will deliver to you if you can't find a local source.

Word of warning about kettlebells! We got some in our gym last year so I thought I'd have a whack at them...

So, naturally, I got onto the all-seeing, all-knowing internet and found a kettlebell programme that promised amazing results - all it required was 200 kettlebell 'swings' a day. That's one set of 200, not 20 here, 30 there equalling 200.

Sounds easy, I thought... so why not!

So after very nearly wrecking my back, hamstrings and almost fainting in the gym before staggering to the water cooler I decided maybe that particular programme wasn't for me...

I'm sure the 'please help me, I almost died because of kettlebells' thread I started later that day is still here in the archives here somewhere!

Moral of Story: Not all programmes make sense - and any idiot can start a website! :)

Very true. I think the only way to properly learn kettlebell technique is with an instructor. Watching a move, you dont always realise which muscle groups are actually switched on and working. It can be very easy to hurt yourself without someone to correct your form while youre learning. Once you know a move, then all is good, you know how it should feel and work.

Posted that site simply as they deliver country wide + to the UK.

Price wise I was looking at getting a pair of 16kg KB's for myself and maybe a set of 14kg clubbells also.

Price for the KB's is €55 each and the only other places I know of in Dublin where I can get KB's, is from Irish lifting http://www.irish-lifting.com/index.php?cPath=1_17 and the price is comparable at 3.50/kg. 16 * €3.50 = €56, or Irish Fit http://www.irishfit.eu/kettlebell.html also €56 for a 16kg KB.

Personally I think this is an ok price for the KB's. Physio Supplies want €84 for a 16kg KB (though price includes shipping to ROI & NI)

Do you know anywhere that sells cheaper ?? as I would be very interested if you did.

    Best Regards,

The average price Ive found anywhere Ive tried is 3.50 per kg also, and I would also be interested in finding a cheaper place to buy them. I need 16s and 8s.

Yis may be able to get them krazyballs cheaper on this website: http://www.jordanfreeweights.com/store/category/cs77/Cast_Iron_Kettlebells.html depending on how the shipping works out...

if you check out the workshop section of their site they have a 4 hour workshop this sunday (for men) for €75 however included in the price is a free 16KG kettlebell so if you wanted to kill 2 birds with one stone that seems like a pretty good price

there is a female workshop on this saturday according to the site which is only €50 and you get a free 8KG kettlebell.

Now I have no idea of the standard of the class but still looks like a decent price and I may do one of these work shops in the new year and they seem to have regular ones on

Thanks for the link, however in the current climate I would rather give my money to an Irish company. And even if this were not the case, I would imagine that the shipping for 32kg (70 lbs) of Kettle bells (2 x 16kg) from the UK would make any saving pretty small. It may even work out more expensive

    Best Regards & Thanks again,

    I bought a 16kg one of these: http://www.kettlebells.co.uk/buykettlebells.html

Bit more expensive but it has a metal 'stopper' (for want of a better word) on the bottom so you can add more weight as you get stronger.

I actually seen some 16's in an Elveries (sp?) and I think I've seen them in one of the Tesco's I was in - can't remember which one. Can't remember the price, but they were cheap enough.

I did crossfits "Helen" wod last night with a 32kg bell. First time using the 32 it got mighty heavy from round 2 on. I haven't gotten around to learning much yet just trying the kettlebell clean and press and having the thing smashing off my forearms. Good fun though. I'll work on the technique over Christmas.

I have just got my new batch of kettlebells in (including new 36kg and 40kg ones!) so i am as of now doing a special on them, 20% off till Jan.

The other notable thing about my kettlebells is the way I get them manufactured. I walked the manufacturers through the process because they have no knowledge of how they are used. Often a kettlebell is just made by 2 moulds put together and molten iron poured in. The problem with this is that you get a small ridge where the two moulds meet. As you use the bells for snatches and the handle rotates in the palm of your hand it will rip the skin off... I have to say I ran out of my kettlebells during the year and I bought some jordan ones. I would never buy them again, they were the worst I have ever seen. I will take a few pics tomorrow, I still have a few that were returned...

I got my manufacturers to bend a steel handle into shape and then make special moulds that have a hole for the handle to be inserted. Then the bell bit is moulded around the steel handle. This means the handles are nice smooth steel and also much stronger than moulded iron.

It's a bit hard to describe so I cut one of them in half and you can see the two separate pieces

Nice I was going to wait until you had 32kg in stock but after seeing this and managing the 32kg alright during helen the other day I've decided to get the 36kg. I gave Tom a shout and he's going to bring one out to me. More Christmas Kettlebell fun.

It's a little know fact that Mick got the moulds for his 32kg kettlebells made from casts of his testicles.

sorry - kinda hijacking here with a stupid question...

But, can you do a kettlebell routine using dumbells??

Is it the way they are designed/the way you grip them or something that differs one from the other?

Would swinging a dumbell with the weights on one side have a similar effect?

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

Cant see you being able to do everything with dumbells. A lot of moves depend on the shape of the kbell, with the weight below the handle, to complete the move. So it could be possible to do a similar workout, but not quite the same. I know Id find it awkward or impossible to do things like snatches and swings. But presses and military lift would be ok.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭fincollins

    Hmmm ok...

Does anyone know of any gyms that have kettlebells? Raw? Id like to give em a try...

Was looking at kitesurfer ryan coote from kerry...pretty intense. Dont have an indo board either...

I'm a kitesurfer too and would be aiming towards something like this...

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,917 ✭✭✭Barry.Oglesby

Most gyms have them at this stage. That doesn't mean that people know what they're doing to use them, but they certainly have them.

    They're a good tool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,829 ✭✭✭TommyKnocker

AFAIK RAW have kettlebells and there is also an online outlet which sells them and runs KB training courses in RAW on a Tuesday and Thursday evening from 18:00 to 19:00. See http://www.buykettlebelldublin.com/

Yeah RAW do have em alrite, yourman just emailed me.

Now i have the dilema of joining up with raw (my dreaded carlisle membership was up last week)...or just buy a 16kg kettlebell...!?

The membership would obviously do me good, but I cant really afford anything other than ben dunnes prices.

Combined with my daily run, watchin diet, and my dumbells, a kettlebell would prob be a good addition to my tools. Or am I way off the mark?

If you keep an eye on the link in my last post or if you phone the guy involved, they often run KB workshops on Saturdays which last 3-4 hours. They go through the basic lifts and check your form etc. Sometimes these workshops are held in RAW and sometimes in Bridgefoot St.

The cost of the workshop is €75 but this includes a free 16kg KB and a manual outlining exercises.

So you get some proper instruction and a 16KG KB :D

What kind of weight do you think would be right to start off with for someone like me?? I am very puny and only just started lifting some weights, mostly 8lbs and 10lbs :o I saw a couple of kettlebells that were 5kg and 7.5kg, what do ye reckon? I just thought they would be handy to have at home so I could do the odd workout without needing a full set of weights (my gym doesn't open on weekends!)

8kgs or 12kg would be grand. You really shouldnt need lighter.

Yeah saw this before...couldnt make the last workshop. Hopefully there will be another one soon. As someone has already pointed out, even if its crap (which is obviously wont), then its a decent price for the kettlebell alone

I'm guessing that you are refering to KB's in the likes of Argos at that weight.

When I first bought KB's I bought a set of 12kgs, even though I thought these would be lightish. I used these to get used to the technique of the different exercises (cleans, snatch, swings get-ups etc). once I was comfortable with the movements, I then moved up to 16kg, then 20kg & 24kg.

I hindsight I am glad I started with the lighter weight, so I would say you could start off with the 5kg & 7.5kg to get used to the movements. But be prepared to move up in weight fairly quickly. As has been said before the recommended weight for a lady starting off seems to be 8kg and progressing up to 12kg or 16 kg fairly quickly.

One thing to look out for is that it appears that some of the cheaper KB's are made by sticking 2 half moulds together. This can create a slight ridge on the handle which can cause cuts and blisters on the hands. If you can, check the handles of the KB's prior to buying to ensure that they are smooth ;).

I can vouch for the competition KB's sold by http://www.buykettlebelldublin.com, smooth handles and no trouble on the hands.

They have a 24kg one with damaged paint on sale for €50 incl. delivery in dublin. I was sorely tempted to get it but reckon I have enough clutter & weights already.

    24kg Competition Kettlebell.

Slight damage to paint work on the bell, other wise Kettlebell is brand new.

Handle looks a little rusty/used but that wouldn't bother me.
