Hi. I could be spending the weekend in Limerick.
Does anyone know good cycling routes with plenty of climbing in the Silvermines.

Best/most severe climb in the area is know as Step - been mentioned here quite a few times. 3km in length and pretty severe. A word of warning though - with the rain we've been having I'm not certain the road is still there! It is located off the Dolla road just a few hundred metres from Silvermines village, signposted as "scenic viewing point". The quality of the road is not good though, so be careful! The TOI (pro race) decided against using it when the race was in the area 2 yrs ago as they deemed it to be unsafe, and given some of the roads they used, that's saying something. Another option is the climb from Dolla - a few kilometres from Silvermines - longer but not as severe.

    Hi Rok On,

I grew up in that area but haven't been on the roads there in a while so not sure what the road quality is like nowadays.

One option is to go out to Killaloe, stick to the lakeside road to Portroe and cut across to the Silvermines and go up Shallee hill and back into Limerick. Its very scenic along the lake with a couple of tough climbs from Portroe onwards

Another option is go stick with the main N7 until after Birdhill and turn off to the Silvermines, go up Shallee and then up the back of Step. As Michael has said the road quality might not be the best (very steep decent) and the climb at Dolla is a decent 4 mile climb. Onto Kilcommon and back into Limerick from there.

Hopefully it's some food for thought. If you need directions on either route PM me.

You should take a look at the progress of this thread "Limerick Hill Climb Challenge". +1 on the Step (2.6km, 10.8% average, 16% max)...a really great climb but a killer. Seriously steep. Also, "the Wall" (1km, average 13%, max 20%) as it is known as (titled Gallows hill 20% in that thread) it good fun, short but very tough.

Let me know if you want any more info on any of the climbs or directions to them etc. Enjoy them and please take the opportunity to time yourself up them and post the results up on the other thread. Just to get it back up and running again, it's more fun than anything as you will see...nothing competitive about it. Good luck! ;)
