BANDS WANTING GIGS LOOK HERE (Mod note post #13)

So I run a student night in the pint bar on eden quey every wednesday night.

I am full on slots untill january so the earliest bands will be able to get a slot will be febuary.

For the student night gigs bands will get paid, this payment depends on how many people show up sometimes it might be 100 euro other times it might be 1 euro. So if bands here are coming to me and demanding a certain amount ill ask you to not, I simply dont have the money to be paying out 100's to bands.

I would ask for headlining bands on the nights to supply the backline except drum kit that will be supplied as will mics.

If equipment is destroyed by a band on stage and it is not their own please note you will have to repay the damages.

Support slots are 35 mins and headlining slots are 45 mins.

All types of music and musicians are welcome this night is open to anyone who wants to play some great music.

BANDS MUST STAY UNTILL THE LAST BAND HAS FINISHED TO BE PAID IF YOU LIVE IN THE COUNTRY AND NEED TO GET A BUS ILL MAKE A EXCEPTION BUT BANDS ARE FINISHED IN TIME FOR THE LAST TRAINS AND DUBLIN BUSSES FOR THIS REASON.

Anything else you would like to know please ask

    Hey,

My band have recently formed and we would be interested in playing a support slot in your venue. We're not too fussed about making lots of money, just enough to get in and out etc. Please let me know if you have any spots available or if you would like to hear some of our stuff. The recordings are a bit rough, but we sound good live.

    Cheers,
    Dave

with my experience with these sort of things it always ends up being 1 euro im sorry but these are the kind of gigs were the place you hold it can hardly hold enough room for your band let alone a crowd never ever had a good time doing this sort of gig because of bad organising and having money taken from time to time i now avoid these gigs like the plague

    What if they wont?

If your the headline band (playing an ext 10min) and providing amps etc shouldnt you get a bigger cut?

It's a fairly simple calculation as far as I know - for every person that comes in on the night two euro from their admission goes to the bands at the end of the night. The money is split evenly between the bands.

Are you talking specifically about The Pint or some other venue?
What do you mean by "having money taken"?

wow why does Evan keep getting grilled about this?? I've seen loads of posts here that were pretty vague and didn't promise any money at all and they got less of a whiney response!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,035 ✭✭✭✭-Chris-

I grilled him last time because he was being vague. I think this is a fair OP and has pretty much all the info.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,457 ✭✭✭Rigsby

Guys, I think it's time to give the OP a break. I also, asked a lot of questions, as his initial post was vague. He has since rectified this. Between this thread and this one : http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055737812 I would say we all have the information we need to decide if we want to participate. So, if people dont like what they read, then dont take part. It is as simple as that. :)

If they wont pay legal action will be taken, and as i said in the opening post i dont have the money to be paying out 100's to bands it is a even split at the end of the night and bands get what they get.... If bands believe themselves to be to big for this ten the answer is simple dont apply but all bands wanting to play this please do get in touch.

Was just thinking that if you play for longer and provide all the other bands your gear maybe you should get a little more for your efforts.....

Get used to it, it's par for the course. So many bands/musicians harbour dreams of going pro, but are completely unprofessional in their attitude and dealings.

With time you'll find a few bands that are reliable and available on short notice who you can call on in a crisis.
Did their "crowd" turn up and be surprised they cancelled, or were they jerking you around from the start?

Never play on a big football day in this City. I played Whelans to 7 people the night of the Champions league final. Never book dates that clash with big sporting events.

TBH it can totally work in your favour. Places like Whelans are not so great though, as the cut off times are abismal, your often playing during the match. Places that play late are great though. Sure the first leg I played a gig, place was packed as people flocked down after the match.

I had the same experience playing Whelan's on a Saturday when Oxegen was on - like a bleedin' ghost-town!!

Evan, maybe you need to figure these things into your plans. It's certainly something you'll need to manage.

Thats ok, it seems like a good deal tbh, played a good few gigs (even festivals) where we didnt get a cent so fair play.

Also it wasn't my band who didn't turn up just in case anyone was wandering........

    Name and shame.

Considering time, effort and money is being put into promotion, that **** isn't on. Also, a point to note that the "promoters are *****" scenario works equally well musicians. :)

I won't name and shame for the simple reason the bands will then probally spread rumors about me being a shi t promoter if i name and shame them. Two of them used the "our guitarist broke his hand" excuse and one just didnt show up all of them have been sent emails telling them we will not be looking for their participation in our events in future.

I'm a very fair person if you scratch my back ill scratch yours.

    Fair play grove

Looks like an honest promoter trying to promote music, reward musicians and make some money too.

Just a small note; would paying all bands even be a fair reflection if one band brought in 50 people and another only 4?

I'd reward the bands that can fill your venue!!

    Alright Groove,

Many bands in this city dont get paid to play gigs, so any money they get they should appreciate it...all bands if they love music will play to get there music out there, fair enough the band bringing gear maybe some petrol allowance but i reckon what ya have goin is a fair deal, im a promoter and i also am in a band so i know from both angles...

Wat i would say is the punters coming in to name the band they're there to see and that way the money can be divided equally! Just because you choose the headline band it doesnt say they will bring the biggest crowd...but thats not your fault..you cant tell who is gonna bring the crowd!!

If the headline band have fuel allowance then they have no complaints about the dividing of the money!

Now thats my rant over! Hope i have helped in some way but keep at it mate, its a ****in tough business i have been doing it for a couple of years and am now quitting to concentrate full time on my own band!!

MUCH LESS STRESS AT TIMES HA HA!!

Take care bro, best of luck!!

You should definitely name and shame them. It will make timewasters think twice before approaching you and cut down on the amount of time, money and effort you put into it. This is the worst business in the world for the sheer amount of incompetent lazy talentless people, If you're not going to name and shame them publicly, then I suggest you send a quick email with the bands name and any of the band members names to any other promoters you know (theres a few on here, even in this thread) and the word will get around quick enough. Don't give up on it completely just be a bit more cautious in future.

Hi there, we're a relatively new band, we will be looking for some support slots in the new year. Money's not an issue, just looking for some experience.

    Check out www.bebo.com/spittinbones

    Cheers mate.

Was on the gigline bebo page. for the gigs on jan 16th, bands pay 150 each for the day gig, and 200 each for the evening gig, (2650 for the promoter if all goes well). I cant believe bands are willing to do this, as the venue couldn't be charging over 2k for rental. The shows in the pint are a good idea, pay on the door. I know some bands are not going to turn up, but asking a band to pay 200 for 30 mins is madness. I dont want to sound patronising but I've seen promoters like this before, (I have played for them in my early days of gigging) and they dont last long. Pretty soon after the "pay to play" thing comes into effect, pretty much all the over 18 bands stop playing (as there is no way they can make money out of it), and you are only left with young bands that have little or no gigging experience, so are going to get a very small crowd.

by the way, I'm not having a dig at you, or any of the bands playing these gigs
