Body Types and Building Muscle

    This is something I was thinking about recently. I'm guessing there are a few body types around, or at least weight patterns. Those who find it easy to put on weight (flab) and those skinny people who struggle to add weight. I know there are maybe a few others such as myself who are overweight and trying to get down to a proper size.

    What I was wondering though, are there people who find it easier to build muscle than others? For example, I'm under the impression that skinny people tend to struggle to put on muscle more than other people. I'm not sure if this is due to their metabolism or something else.

    I'm just wondering because I find it easy to put on excess weight as fat, would I be able to put on muscle quicker than someone who's naturally skinny, even if we were doing a relatively comparable workout and stuff?

    It sort of sounds like a stupid question I know. I guess I'm just hoping that I'm some sort of genetic freak who will be able to build muscle really fast :) I've only been back at the gym for a week and my biceps, triceps and chest seem to have extra muscle already. But maybe that's just because I haven't worked out in ages.

    Pretty much - metabolism does play a fairly significant part, as do carb tolerances. Some people who find it easy to put on weight will also find it easy to build muscle and broadly speaking it's because their bodies are primed to add weight - they will also have more type 2 muscle fibres meaning they have a greater propensity to build muscle than 'skinnier' people. They also tend to make better bodybuilders, sprinters and powerlifters, for example.

    In your case I wouldn't be surprised to see you adding a nice bit of muscle - more motivation for you too.

    You're thinking along the right lines. There's 3 basic body types;
    -ectomorph (typical skinny guy)
    -mesomorph (the guy we hate - the one who puts on muscle easy and stays lean)
    -endomorph (the guy who gets fat easily, but can also gain more muscle easier than the ecto)

    I've only really ever met two pure mesomorphs in my life and I can't stand them (not really!!). Most people are a blend of one or two of the classes.
