Dublin 24/6 Gyms

Hi, I need to find a good gym around the Dublin 24 or Dublin 6 areas. I've looked at a couple sites (like Westpark on the Greenhills road) but nobody quotes their prices online. I'm not in a financial position to go somewhere that charges a huge amount of money so I guess I'd be looking at a gym where I can either have an off-peak membership, or go to individual abs classes and weight training classes without being a member. Does anyone know of anywhere they can recommend to me?

I really need to put on a little bit of weight according to my doctor, as I am getting to the point where I am considered verging on underweight and could possibly get worse. I would rather put on these few extra pounds by gaining muscle rather than fat, so have concluded that along with a healthy eating plan and a good workout regime this might do the trick. I do enough cardio with walking and cycling as it is, so I'm looking for ways to tone muscle more than anything. I get really bored doing weights/pushups/situps at home and never stick to it so I think I need to actually GO somewhere and get into a routine!

Thanks for looking, hope someone can help :)

    Hi mate,

Ive been a member of many gyms in Tallaght, and i'm currently at the Arena Gym (opposite the Rovers Staduim next to Lidl) Great facilities, and an impressive weights area. Fee is circa €45 per month. I think it's cheaper over the year. Go and have a tour.

    Hope this helps!

    Theres a list of pay as you go council gyms here;
    http://www.dublincity.ie/RecreationandCulture/SportsFacilities/LeisureCentres/Pages/LeisureCentres.aspx

    There's also places like this which also do pay as you go;
    http://www.bhaf.ie/

I sometimes use a PAYG gym myself if traffic fuhked too busy.

    Hi,

Thanks for your help guys. Pay as you go gyms are a really good idea, I didn't even know they existed! one of the links worked for me (the Dublin City Council one) but they were all over the north side, is there anything similar on the south side? I might have a look and see if they have any listed on the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Council site.

Joe - the Arena gym sounds good, I know where that is and it's not too far for me. Does it have a website? €45 is pretty reasonable I guess too, something to consider if I just wanted to try it out for a month and see how it goes and not commit to a whole year. There's a place in Tallaght I got a voucher for when I got home from work: Crunch Fitness? It's in Belgard Square. Full membership for €495 a year (it had a discount voucher in the promotion for €550!) which would be something to consider I guess. I'm considering going around a few gyms this weekend, like to Westpark fitness, and asking what kind of deals they can do and wave that Crunch Fitness voucher at them and see if they can do me a cheaper deal!!!! I'd say it may be possible that the effects of the recession and the hope of getting another member might prompt them to offer me something? :p

I just wish I had someone to train with, as being quite a smallish girl I really don't want to be going too far on my own late at night!

Hi have you tried Carslile in kimmage D6. its a fairly good gym and is only 225 euro for years membership at the moment. They also have personel trainers which i've heard are doing some good deals at the moment if your looking for someone to put a programme together for you.

No website i'm afraid. And sure you'll be pretty safe at night, the gyms are always busy, so there'll be plenty of people around.

I didn't realise you were a girl. In that case, you'd love crunch fitness in belgard square (opposite Tamara's restaurant) as there's lots of classes.. (although everything's pink:D!)

    Good luck...

Pay as you go city gym should also be opening in Rathmines some time soon. Looks to be nearly built

Yeah any news on that at all?? Someone just mentioned something about it but they dont seem to have advertised it online or anything and I heard its opening in december.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

Not sure but pass by every day and looks close to finished from the outside.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Getwellsoon

Joe, yes I noticed they had a lot of classes, but I still think it's pretty pricey! Haha I don't give a damn what colour anything is, not a fan of pink myself but hey it all does the same thing!! :D

Rathmines would be ideal, I work close to there. I've never noticed a gym being constructed, maybe I should open my eyes more! If it's going to open in December and is a pay-as-you-go type thing it could be ideal for me, so I might hang on until that opens and just pay for a few classes elsewhere up until then.

I'm going to LA Fitness in Dartry today, to see if they still do a 5 day free trial, to be shown around and ask if I can just do classes instead of being a full member. Anyone know anything about them?

Also, there's a place near nutgrove, in Ballinteer, called "meadowbrook" leisure centre, it's a pay as you go place. Might head out there on the weekend and check it out. It's €6.50 for a session and the yearly membership fees look pretty low as well. Only drawback I see is that the public have the same rights as members so if you went there as a member and it was packed out by the public then you wouldn't be allowed in! Anyone been here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,846 ✭✭✭discombobulate

If you work in Rathmines also have a look at www.rawcondition.com

Membership isn't as cheap as some places but they do pay as you go on their classes as far as I know

Magotch, I went for an appointment to see the place tonight and I LOVE IT! I didn't think so much of LA Fitness even though the guy was really friendly... it was just too expensive for what it was. Westpark was AMAZING though, I can't wait to start! I'm going to sign up on Saturday. The pool is lovely, the changing rooms are nice and clean, the women only weights area is a good idea, the whole spinning thing is pretty exciting for me too as they seem quite focused on that and I loooove cycling, and their range of classes from abs toning to aqua aerobics to pilates is pretty impressive. Maybe I'll see ya round! :p

haha... well I am 30 years old but look quite a lot younger, 5ft 2", with short brown hair and a big blonde fringe! Maybe we will meet some day :)

My aim is to eat lots more than I have been doing in the past, but exercise too. I want to get more calories and nutrients and exercise so not to put back on too much fat and make sure I tone up while doing so!

So... I'm going to join Westpark tomorrow - probably have my fitness assessment on Sunday. What do they do during a fitness assessment? Do they make you run and take your pulse? Do lots of sit ups and press ups? Measure your BMI and body fat? I have no idea what to expect! I'm looking forward to it because I need some advice! I could cycle and run forever, but I'm so crap when it comes to lifting weights and doing press ups, I'll probably seem really unfit!

So I went and joined yesterday and used the pool and the spa pool. I haven't swum since I was about 18 (was a lifeguard back in the day!) so 100 lengths took me quite a time!!!

My fitness assessment is later on today. I'm really looking forward to it. I think I will mainly use the gym for swimming, rowing machine, weights, pilates, cross trainers and occasionally spinning (looks like fun but I cycle all the time so probably don't need to do it very often!).

The womens "toning tables" sound intriguing, what the heck are they?!! Are they those kind of vibrating things for lazy people? LOL

Sharon did my assessment, and I did really well! She gave me a routine starting off on the rowing machine and then doing a load of weight stuff. I was aching all over this morning!

Staying in bed is too tempting in weather like this!

think i saw you going in,is that a fixed gear bike you had?and 100lenghts??????????? oh my someone is fit,i cant swim that well so i think i m doing well if i get 10in ,i like the rwo then weights thing, get u all warmed up,i d say take it well easy with weights for a week or two or you ll be sore, hard to do when they feel light at start, and know wat u mean about weather, but gota get them workouts in,i m off to it in a bit if i motivate myself

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Getwellsoon

Yeah that's my bike :) Haha if you saw me going in I was probably wrapped head to toe in rain gear ten times too big for me and looking like some weird little ewok!! :p Say hello next time!

I used to be a lifeguard many moons ago so swimming is second nature to me... as is cycling. Only forms of exercise I hate are running and team sports!! Can't stand anything involving a game and a ball. Urgh. I'm really liking the weights though. I think the routine she gave me needs a bit of tweaking though, I can lift a lot more than what she gave me even though I look quite puny, although I do find one of the apparatus (god I'm such a novice I don't even know the name of it - the one where you sit with your back to the weights and you stretch your arms out to the side, grab the handles and pull them in towards your chest??) is really hard and I have had to lower the amount she gave me as my chest muscles really hurt!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 734 ✭✭✭abceire

think you talking about peck decs that are hurting,u probably use alot of muscles with other exercise you have been doing, but unlikely you used chest in way the peck decs work it,can be sore for a bit,and when it feels so light its so tempting to ramp up the weights,i ve never got booked in with one of the trainers, silly i know, but i m fussy, i like doing things my own way,and i think they air of side of everything being safe too much, plus depends what the trainers are into them selfs,i do like to try find trainers that are into the kinda works oyou like and pick there brain,i m david by the way, i always feel bit nerdy when you meet people in real life after talking on a web site, and you say hi i m and say user name, any who keep up the good work
100lengths in the pool and u wana put on weights?????

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,885 ✭✭✭Getwellsoon

Yeah I like doing my own thing as well, but I also think I could benefit from the fitness assessments, as I need all the advice I can get, especially as I am too thin now and am in a bit of a mess weight wise and need to get myself back on track...

My name's Rebecca by the way. Don't worry about introducing yourself. Plenty of people first meet online... t'isnt like we're internet dating or anything HAHA!!! :P

i m great at asking advice, but then if i dont like it i leave it out, pity you a veagen, spelt wrong? i ve heard of a GOMAD diet, more for people wishing to bulk up,its milk milk and more milk,4litres a day for a month,i d give it a go but i aint that mad on milk,i m bit like you, i was 76kgs and went down to 70kgs with not training ,being out of ireland and new physical job, back to 74ish kgs now and lowest body fat that i ve had in ages so i m happy enough, have a body building mate who s good for advice,he s huge and strong, plus he studying now to be trainer, have few books too,you might like to look at starting strength routine, i ve gone back to it,its nice and simple, thought i d do that while i getting back into it ,sorry for rambling on, i m all motivated and stuff gym wise last few weeks

I think I would puke and puke and puke if I drank that much milk now!! I think I'm intolerant to it, I was actually raised on soya milk as a baby, because my mum had so many allergies they thought I might be allergic to milk. But then when they found I wasn't I drank milk most of my life but then found I had really bad stomach aches if I ate too much dairy, so I cut it out. I'm not actually a vegan for the animals' sake alone, of course that does play a part in it, but it's also for health reasons. I've actually started adding a tiny bit of fish into my diet here and there for getting essential oils and fats and I think it's helped me consume more calories and my hair looks much better now too.

I'm finding it REALLY hard to gain weight though, I really can't make myself eat sh*tloads (I would just feel sick) and I do eat some quite calorific stuff, it's just all in smallish portions and I am never hungry or anything. I just don't know what to do! My bodyfat is 17% according to their fitness test and I know it's good to have low bodyfat (the chart said "well done! you have low body fat!" LOL) but that is NOT a good thing when it starts messing with your body. Women have to be really careful like that, we're *meant* to have a bit of fat on us for everything to function properly. My issue is I love being the size I am, I feel really fit and energetic and healthy but I know I *have* to bulk up a bit more and put on a bit of weight and it's just not happening... :(

Oh well I'm going to give it until mid January and see how things go.

I suppose when he was making the book he forgot most people are much littler than him and might not be able to lift it as well. That Little Britain sketch with Dennis Waterman comes to mind, LOL.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 734 ✭✭✭abceire

but with the book its handy, you dont have to write the theme tune sing the theme tune, you only have to read it,before i joined the new gym it also came in handy for some calf raises,i got another one as a present too,its quite old but re printed, kinda funny, its thinks you can do lots of sit ups etc to burn off just your tummy, there so many things you can do to help put on muscle, its hard to remember them all and then actually do them all, week in week out,
my backs nice and sore ,ment to do light week last week, but got a text from a mate,we kinda having lil comp until new year at dead lifts, lil extra motivation,i wanted to keep up with him,so saturday got carried away, stupid, now i ll have to take it easy, annoying

heres how you can lift huge weights,u have to shout light weight baby at the weights
    here s an example
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4m_9FFBHcg&feature=related

and if you master that one u can try, aint nothing but a peanut, that a bit more tricky
