It'll be interesting if Rachel Wyse can be as entertaining as the guys from TG.

If she can't present properly... just turn off the sound and still watch!

Apparently there was one on RTE years ago that Prat Kenny produced. Anyone remember that or know anything more about it?

I think they are wasting their time for the following reasons:

A: They wont be able to get their hands on hyper/super cars
B: They have a section about big machines?????
C: They are Irish. No one in the UK will watch an Irish made show that rivals with Top Gear.

Don't get me wrong, I wish them luck. But Ireland is not the country for such a show.

People here don't have the love and passion for cars that they have in the UK. People with money here only buy BMW's, Merc's and Audi's. and even at that they buy the biggest "base model" they can afford.

If these guys get passed 1 season I'll be very surprised

Think that was TG4 and fairly recent. Most of the interesting motors in that were based NI.

Drive was one of the worst (if not THE worst) motoring shows I have ever watched...

Every week they reviewed base model cars

    Mondeo LX etc.

The cars didn't even have alloy wheels!
    HUBCAPS!

and they never once reviewed a high performance car.

    waste of time
    waste of money
    waste of space

It was an accurate reflection of the market in 1994 tbf

Drive! Ha I remember that rubbish, it was painfully bad with monotone presenters.. "Now this Fiesta Lx is a good car for driving to superquinn in"

The best car they ever reviewed was an Mr2 with 120hp, sarah the racing driver whatever her name was kept referring to it as the best thing since sliced bread. Surprised she could fit in it, she must have been 6ft6 built like a man. Such an oddball collection of characters on that show.
They had a magazine out for a few years later but have no idea if it still exists.

    Rubbish show

was it not drive that reviewed a dodge viper??
in a wine colour with white stripes, i remember it was filmed driving down the quays in dublin, i dont know where they got it from though:confused:

The only reviews I remember was when Karl Tsigdinos was wearing a purple Toyota town car that was basically a cube with wheels and a Lambo Tractor. Yes, they reviewed tractors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭RedorDead

Conor Twomey on this show wasnt bad in NewCar magazine - just wonder how he will transfer to screen.

If they do get any "exotica" expect lots of adverts for Des Cullen or Richford etc etc

I recall them doing a Dodge Ram 1500...this was long before anyone had even heard of a tiger economy.
The thing wouldn't even fit down the roads they were driving on.

Don't know how it survives though as it's barely stocked in any shops at all.

its was a very poor effort at a car programme, your wan was no stig and that canadian dude was pure rubbish had no clue about cars

TG4 had a go at this a few years ago Eugeen ferry form donegal that rally's a 2.4 escort and Brid deery that presents on the limits sport used present the programme

I think with Firth Gear gone now (Last series was awful) there is space for a "real" car show, not just an entertaining program that has car's in it.

I think the lads from EVO & Autocar magazines would do a great job. Their web-videos are pretty much the best car "prorgrams" out there.

    They also produce this

    www.edrive.ie

Ireland's first free monthly digital car magazine.

To date Drive are the only title in Ireland to produce a TV show to reach a mass market. That's quite an achievement considering all the competition from UK owned car magazines available here in Eire.

When it was aired on RTE the audience was one of the highest they had reaching very high numbers weekly.

Top Gear is one of a kind, class entertainment a real wild ride.

I can't see how anyone can compete with an audience of however many hundred million viewers that Top Gear has.The BBC have megabucks to produce shows and better still NO ADVERTS unlike Ireland.

Drive was extremely similar to what Top Gear was like at the time, people seem to forget that it also reviewed Mondeo LXs before the relaunch...

I actually prefer seeing Mondeo LX's being reviewed rather than boring Ferrari's that will be an unrealistic ownership proposition for about ninety per-cent of the country.

iMotors doesn't even work. I tried it on 4 computers and the thing doesn't load properly. It takes ages to load up then it breaks down all the time. eDrive from the Drive (www.drivemagazine.ie) stable works and looks pretty good. They could do with more videos on it though.

Yes, people seem to forget that Top Gear used to be mostly boot sill height comparisons and reivews of the latest Yugo. But they did have a lot of sports cars and stuff on classics, and rally coverage. And Clarkson was only given about 5 minutes a week to be a prat :)

Drive wasn't terrible, I remember actually going out of my way to watch it and only slightly regretting it. It even made it to Discovery Home & Leisure for a while.

correct, it was brought in from the UK for the show sometime around 1998 or 99 iirc

I used to prefer Top Gear before they changed the format to the messing about now with C list english celebs and pointless, wasteful challenges. I like it when they actually review a car, which makes up about 25% of the show.

I used to enjoy it immensely when it was Quentin Wilson and Tiff and the crew and it was all about the cars. The lads on Top Gear can be funny, but a lot of the show is tedious.

As for the Irish show a few years back, I didn't find it that bad. Yes the cars were boring and mundane and it could have done with a bit more excitement, but at least it was about the cars with an honest opinion, Clarkson has so many varied views you wouldn't know what to think.
It was also refreshing to see an Irish opinion as well as Irish locations. And i'm only 25, no aul fella here. :)

It certainly was. Which would be ok, but for the fact that it was made in 1998. Actually, I'm not being fair - I enjoyed it at the time. It wasn't a patch on Top Gear, but they did ok considering they probably had little or no budget.

I could be wrong, but I think they reviewed a Dodge Viper once.

I reckon they should get the guy off of today fm, can't think of his name but he filled in for ray darcy a week or two ago. You can tell he loves cars and knows what he's talking about. He's also very natural and easy to listen to

Almost as good as the top gear traffic light challenge in Dubai between the Lambo SV and the 722 SLR. In fairness there is a gap for decent reviews of everyday motors but they need to drop in some exotica aswell.

I'm exactly the same. I like seeing normal cars being reviewed. Fifth Gear does it sometimes.

I'm just not enjoying top gear these days. Last show I seen them in some super cars and they had to drive through Romania.. I just turned the volume up and left the room to make dinner.

There are so many car magazines that review the Mundaneo LX and Insignia's etc, in massive depth. There is nothing exciting about reading a review of a Ferrari, you need to be able to see it move, hear it roar, watch the arse wobble as it floored etc. Watching Tiff Needel and Tom Ford (usually wearing shorts to add a bit of excitement to a dreary show I suppose) wafting about in the latest sales repmobile is like watching paint dry.

With normal cars it's about the mpg, boot space, tax rate, insurance category, units of measurement that are suited to paper for analysis. Autocar and What car measure the lenght, breath and depth of the boot so buy those mags if you are interested, Top gear magazine also covers those empirical measurements so you can check if your golf clubs will fit or not, but with Super/Hyper cars none of that stuff really applies as anyone that can afford them doesn't care about those figures.

I would hate to see top gear going back to bland car reviews, other than the Dacia Sanderos reviews and the likes.

An Irish car show will be like a non stop Toys for big boys show, used, borrowed cars being pimped on behalf of garages that can't sell them and dull paddy spec entry level reviews.

It would only take maybe 5 or 10min to review a new model Modeo and compare it to the rest of the competition. What's wrong with that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,608 ✭✭✭Victor_M

Because no-one will buy a car based on a 5 min TV review without taking it and it's rivals for a spin anyway, so why bother, buy a car mag do your research.

Top gear gives us mere mortals access to cars we may occasionally pass in traffic if we are lucky, they let us see them in full flight, hear, drive them as they are supposed to be driven.

So it's all about buying cars then. Are you going to buy any of them super cars? I want to watch a TV show about cars. If I wanted to read about them I would do so through a car mag or online.

Some people are just interested in cars without actually wanting to buy them. I like hearing about all the new super cars as much as I like hearing about what new average cars are coming out.

And your second paragraph is odd. I like seeing/hearing all of that on top gear. Your point?

This guy was one of the presenters of Drive

    http://www.fm104.ie/on-air/shows.aspx?show_guid=3d910cda-0ccf-470c-96a5-e3cb62662ea1

I remembering hearing one story that they were doing a review on the new Honda Civic and they likened it to the old model that was a favourite for boy racers and Honda complained to RTE and then pulled all their advertising!

I reckon Fifth Gear got way too hard a time and didn't think it was a bad show at all. The only thing wrong with it was that it was totally car-related and didn't show you clips of the latest blockbusters as well, like Top Gear now does. It was an honest car show, devoid of the fancy camera work, egotistical personalities and all the bullsh1t that goes with Top Gear.
