Sorry if this is the wrong forum but need suggestions.

Just bought a Toshiba netbook for my daughter to use and need to set it up.

Will probably wipe it except for MS office which is preinstalled, Firefox and AVG free.

I want to make it so that she can only see what I want her to see - no images, controlled zones, facebook by invitation only, etc etc.

So she can learn on it, talk to her cousins on facebook, and play a few games.

I figure Netnanny or similar is essential, but anyone got any ideas about the best way to do this.

Probably a profile just for her.

Any suggestions or ideas gratefully appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Not something that I have any experience of. There's a page here that might be some help.

I think that you're going to have to keep an eye on it yourself.

Vista's parental controls are - draconian. Lovely in a way. Word to the wise though if you unlock google searches it tends to unlock a lot of things :p a third party whitelist program would be useful.

Facebook is full of trouble and I've seen grown men get viruses from following links from "their friends" or being tricked into giving away their login details etc. - just know that the best method of parental control is parenting.

    Dunno about specialised software.

In Vista/Windows 7 I create a profile with no admin rights.

Block access to all applications I don't want them to use.

I block IE. But if you want to allow some web access you could allow the browser and in IE (Dunno about Firefox) you can set Trusted sites and Restricted sites.

I wouldn't let them use Facebook myself but thats your call. I'd also insist they use it only where theres an adult in the room who can monitor them at all times.

Perhaps as they get smarter I'll need to something a bit cleverer too.

That's the rub. The kids will see it as a challenge to get around you. ;)

Its a toshiba netbook running XP.

She is only seven so I will be locking it down tight. And she will only be able to use it with us with her - unless I am satisfied that it is safe.

Will check out that link posted.

    Anyone else?

    Thanks in advance.

For Internet access I use Micsosofts Family Safety software. Have a look here.
