    Hi All,

Any advice here would be helpful. I have been training in WTF Tae Kwon Do for the past 4years, and have a BB. I have gone back to college PT and work full time and have no motivation to go training at all these days
where as I used to train as much as possible when in college/ working during summers.

Also a violent situation came about recently and I didnt feel my TKD skills
were much use, altough all involved walked away safely, by talking through it rather than becoming aggressive.

Is TKD a good SD Art or is it too much of a sport ? Any views as I am either considering changing style or just taking a break until I have more time on my hands to fully commit to TKD, rather than the 2/3 hours I can each week ?:confused:

If self defence is your only priority, then taekwondo is not the best option IMHO.

If however you enjoy TKD, and are just feeling a bit worried by this unpleasant encounter, take solace from the fact that these things are rare for most people, and you used the best weapon for the job - common sense.

Honestly, if were trained in cyber ninja commando street kung fu you probably would have handled it the same way - the best way.

Take some time and take stock of the situation, engage in some honest self analysis and then decide if you want to take up some other art. At least then it'll be for the right reason.

Hey Rob ! And welcome to Boards. You done well getting out of that situation without a fight. In my opinion, it sounds like you have lost some intreased in TKD.

You have been training for 4 years bro, Dont quit now, Think off all the hard work you put in !! Why dont you expand, Learn Muay Thai aswell. I know you busy but maby go Muay thai once a week and TKD once. I think its one of the best forms of self decence.

Then you are right in line to train MMA ina while, maby in the summer, when you have more time.

    All the best !

Rob, I recommend you look at the stuff taught by Geoff Thompson, Lee Morrison and Peter Consterdine, and others. Put their names into Youtube and you'll get a whole load of videos. It's the real "realistic self defense" stuff, and most of it you won't learn in the majority of modern or traditional Martial Arts gyms.

    Hi there,
I've been doing TKD since I was a wee lad, obviously I love it. For me however Taekwon-Do is best understood as a sport. Both the ITF and WTF systems have huge sporting aspects to them, as you will know.
If you are into your sport, like to stay in peak condition and compete every now and again on the mat, stick with your TKD. With the right coach it can be a positive and healthy environment to be in. With the wrong coach it can an environment filled with fantasy and comfort zones.

If you are purely interested in learning how to deal with real life fight situations I would recommend a system like Urban Combatives. Rob Pepper here on the forum has a guy called Lee Morrison coming to Wexford in December for a seminar, if you are really interested in this style of training, go and give it a bash, you won't be disappointed!
