    Hey guys,

Could anyone give me some insight into the different types of PSP and essentially which one is recommended??

The PSP Go being the newest i'm sure would typically be the wise choice but I'm not sure I don't really like the look of the layout. Looks a bit awkward?

Anyone have any experience with either or both and could give me some advantages or insight??

    Thanks in advance!!

You have the PSP (Phat) which is the original one it plays games from UMD (disk) or from memory card.

The PSP Lite is a slimed down version but does the same thing

The PSP Go is a new model it doesnt have the UMD disk drive and it slides to expose the buttons it has a 16gb HD to save games. But other than that its the same. Bar the cost.

If you are going to buy one get a PSP Lite. The PSP Go is more expensive and not worth it. Basically you are paying more for the privilege of not being able to use UMDs. The PSP Lite does everything the PSP Go does and it reads UMD games. That includes also being able to download games from the PSN store.

    No it doesn't

Since the OP is looking for advice on which model to get (and therefore it can be assumed they don't know the relative features of each), expanding on that statement might turn your post into something helpful.

Get a PSP 2000 slim and lite like i did. Around €80 on ebay and dosnt come with the screen issues like the 3000 model.

Well the PSPGO has a save state feature that allows you to pause a game, save the state and turn off the psp. This is handy if the game isn't that portable friendly (not many save states). I have a GOW:CoO save state on mine the last week, while i have been playing other games instead.

It also has bluetooth so can use a mobile phone as HSDPA modem to connect to PSN. This is very handy if you are juggling multiple region psn accounts. The bluetooth also connects to bluetooth earpieces and supports ad2p devices. You can even get a PSPGO bluetooth headphone remote for it.

Since it has bluetooth, it can use the dual shock 3 controller as its controls. Other PSP modems require the PSP connected to the PS3 via USB for the DS3 controller to be used. This is handy if you like to hook your psp up to your tv when you get home.

I doubt anyone is going to use those features of the PSP GO. I bought mine to play games and the lite does it the best. Also the PSP lite also has a sleep mode that works almost as well as the save state feature.

Not true. There was plenty of people on Neogaf saying they used the DS3 feature. Sleep is good but not as good as the save state as sleep you just go back to the game, while save state allows access to other games without losing progress.

Still, I prefer owning a copy of my games and having a wider selection of games and being able to buy older ones for cheap instead of losing all the games I own when Sony go to a new generation and drop the servers.

Thats a good point. Though I've backed up everything to my mac

Thanks for all the replies guys, being honest I can't see the benefits of the PSP Go being worth the extra cost so I think i'll go for the PSP Lite.

1 question, do they still make the UMD's for the PSP and PSP Lite?? Or are all newer games strictly download??

I think that's a pretty short sighted thing to say. Will Microsoft suddenly drop Xbox Live when they move to their next system? I doubt it. Will Sony drop the Playstation Network when they release the PSP2 and PS4? I highly doubt that also. Like Gummy Panda said, you just back the games up (e.g. using Media Go). I'm also betting that my digital copies of PSP games will work on the PSP2 when that comes out. I doubt the PSP2 will have a UMD drive.

Yep, don't worry about it, Sony have said that all releases going forward will still be on UMD. There are some games that are download exclusive though (like the new LocoRoco game and the PSP minis) but just get yourself a big enough memory card for your PSP lite and you'll be grand.

I think you are severely underestimating how little Sony and MS give a crap about backwards compatibility. You can't get a PS3 now that plays PS2 games and MS's backwards compatibility is a joke on the 360. I severely doubt they will bother with incredibly difficult software emulation in their next machines and you can be sure there won't be expensive hardware emulation.

Sure they don’t care when it’s not making them money, but according to that leaked Sony/Sega document PS2 (and Dreamcast! :D) games are launching next year on the PSN. We have no reason to doubt the launch PSP2 will have BC when all launch Sony systems have had BC. I'm just thinking about how much more valuable my PSN copies of PS1 games are becoming to me, when I can play them (and transfer saves) on two systems. I have no reason to doubt the PSP2 and PS4 will have PS1 BC. It would be great for me if the same thing happened with DD PSP games on the PSP2.

Besides, that’s not the point I was making Retr0. Do you really think that the moment the PSP2 and PS4 launch that the servers for the PSP/PS3 PSN will be turned off? Like hell they will until it stops being a money maker for them. People buy digital copies of music every day and you don’t hear them worrying about servers being turned off – you just back up your stuff when they do.

It's probably a discussion for a whole new thread but I just think as a consumer and as a retrogaming and collecting enthusiast digital download is the worst thing that could happen.

When those servers go down there' be no way to ever play those games again, and they will go down.

By the way, I am hooked on Jeanne D'Arc at the moment.

Being playing it for two days straight, PSP is a good machine when you are recouperating.

More hopeful now for VC2 being on a handheld.

It's really good isn't. It's a shame it got ignored since it got released so close to FF Tactics, no strategy RPG no matter how good can compete with that game. I really must put some effort into trying to beat jeanne d'arc.

You haven't beat it? The boss fights at the end are fantastic. I love that game so much, thanks for giving me that final push to buying it. :pac: I love the art style and how colourful it is. Hope Cardboard Senki and Ushiro get localised, Level 5 games on PSP are just the bee's knees.

noodler, have you played the Valkyria Chronicles demo? It's in Japanese but I would imagine it's not too hard to follow.

Not yet my man, have no Japanese account set up and I also haven't updated my firmware to the one you recommended a little while ago.

One thing about Jeanne D'Arc, is it normal that all my soliders have practically no MP to start off with at the start of a battle?

Its a bit annoying, renders certain people useless for a move or two.

Jean is a legend (oh spears)- I'm at the gates of Paris now.

Jean D'arc is such a lovely looking game. Its got a real Level 5 feel to it.

I need to get back into it as i really liked it.

Sorry, it was early when I wrote that and I totally forgot about firmware issues. I think you'll be pleased with the transition from PS3 to PSP - if nothing else the gameplay is as good as the first game. It may even have the potential to be better. We'll see about the story and characters though...

Yeah it's normal for them to start with low MP, it's percentage based, I think you start with 30% or your total, is that about right? I figure it works that way to make it harder. Later on there are some moves that enable you to hit someone from anywhere on the map so starting with low MP stops you becoming too powerful later on.

Spear are class alright. On Chapter 4, did you choose Claire or Rose? I thought Rose was almost as useful as the spear users once she reached a high enough level.

Love how this is becoming a Jeanne D'Arc thread, heh.

PSP-3000 is the way to go, I`m not sure what screen glitch was people are mentioning, mine is perfect, its a fantastic screen compared to the psp-1000.
PSP-go isnt that good imo, seems sonys commitment to having downloadable games isnt solid enough, some havent been added to online store, and seems theres a lag for new releases.

Make sure you pick up a copy of ff7, its a fantastic game, I played it recently for the first time, and 12 years on its still amazing. Crisis core is really good too.

What if the games and media were saved onto a M2 card, will they still be worthless when the servers go down.
Reason I ask is I have a Psp Go.

First off, I'm not 100% true how this is, but it's what we've been told in work (I work in a computer games store). Until now, if anyone asked me for advice on which PSP to get, I'd say the Lite too. Until now that is..

Supposedly Sony are slowly phasing out the sale of UMDs and moving the PSP to download only. I'm told that the UMDs are quite expensive to make and are costing Sony a fair bit - supposedly the use of UMDs kept the mini-disc makers in operation. In the store where I work, we won't be selling PSP games into the new year.

To the OP, as others said you can still download games onto your PSP Lite. But in my opinion, I'd buy the PSP Go. I think it's a neater machine, and it'll be the most up-to-date as regards hardware issues. If I was you, I'd only go for the PSP Lite if you already have PSP games or would be planning on borrowing from a friend.
