To be honest I'm surprised that having two on at a time was a winning strategy. Did they do this for the entire race? 12 hours a day in pairs would take it out of you a lot more than 6 solo I would have thought.

Yep. The navan team that came 2nd in RAAM last year used this strategy. It's used by nearly all the decent teams over there apparently.

This wasnt made clear on the video (hinted at when one of them says 'we need to be strict with the 20mins'.. / something to that effect), but what they actually had was 2 pairs, where one cyclist would be on the road at all times, but each pair does a 6hr 'shift', with one member of the pair cycling 20mins while the other sits in the van behind, and then a seamless changeover to get the other guy on the road.

Meanwhile, the other pair drives ahead to await the previous pair at the end of their 'shift'.

So essentially its 10mile time trial after 10 mile time trial..

    ;)

Ah right, that would make more sense. I was thinking they had two guys on the road at all times with them taking turns drafting.

Well Blorg, that is certainly food for thought for our tactics in RAI 2010. I am intrigued at the number of different approaches possible / used by the teams from 2009. I never thought about this short stint (10 - 20km) on the bike idea.

Give it two months and i'll give you the empirical data we took from 2nd place (boooooooo No Prior Experience) lads on the An Post Team

They boys were great to me, giving blood, saliva, heart rate, psychological and power data to me at many many points in the race.

Very interesting area to work in, and a great race.

20min rotations is pretty much optimal for the RAI and RAAM as it allows intervals to be paced above FTP (and other predictors) and allow recovery before the next bout. But i digress.....and dont want to give to much away!

Only thing that changed was night versus day shifts where rotational time was slightly modified.

The two teams adopted the same strategy, main thing that won it for the NPE boys: Teamwork, big hats off to the boys, they rode an excellent race. When AP-TC had a blow out and full electrical fail on BOTH vehicles they stuck to their plan and it worked.

Remember that Emmet? I think you may have heard P shouting a little.... ahhem

Was involved with Graham and the boys in the lead up to the race (physiological testing etc) and from the get go they had the potential to win.

All joking aside, class act and they deserved it.
