Potterton Prima F50

Hopeing some central heating gurus can shed some light on this. We have a Potterton Prima F50 boiler fitted to our central heating system. It is about 18 years old and regularly serviced. 2 years ago it died and the service engineer diagnosed a faulty mainboard, which he replaced, at a cost of $450. We got our regular service last week and all was fine, except the high tension cable had to be replaced (€125 for service and cable). The day after the service the system was fine, but the next day no heat. I had a look at the boiler and the fans/pump came on and the ignition spark lit (I didn't open the unit, could see the spark through the window and hear the fans/pump), so we called the engineer back. He had a look and said the gas valve had died and needed to be replaced. He called this morning to replace the valve and this didn't sort the problem. He then tried a new mainboard and this resolved the problem, at a cost of €589! He left the original valve in the boiler. Is it usual for these boards to go in two years? He says it is a good boiler, and we were just unlucky but at this stage I'm begining to think otherwise. Surely it should last longer than this? Feeling a bit hard-done-by at the moment. Any info/opinions appreciated.

€589 for a PCB change is steep.

He is right on one thing though, PCB's will and can fail.Seems like you were unlucky.

Would you consider changing your boiler to an A rated one in the future? A Baxi/Pottorton model could be bought for under €1000.

Thanks for the reply, I thought €589 was taking the mickey, to be honest. With the money spent on the two boards I could have bought a new boiler. Strangely enough the board was sending a signal to the gas valve but not strongly enough to open it.. Cant afford to replace now but also cant see any point to spending more on this one.

I have the same model boiler, no pilot light now :-(
The pressure bar is on 2 which is normal I think from what Ive read on the side of the boiler.

Will have to get someone look see.

The weirdest thing is the open fire in the sitting room goes off by itself.
I love waking in the sitting room with the valve full on and the fire off.

We bought a carbon monoxide alarm just in case.

Treating this as an emergency now.
