Heart Rate Monitor

    Hi,

    I have a Garmin Forerunner 50. It has all the bells & whistles, footpod, HR monitor etc. I have never used the HR monitor. Are these things of any benefit to a relatively new runner like me?

    Depends!

    "Proper" HR training involves a lot of testing and retesting to gauge the correct levels of intensity and is best done in conjunction with an experienced coach who can guide you on the correct intensity levels. Tunney is your man for advice on this.

    Most people though use a HRM more as a guide to intensity - 10k pace is above x bpm or east run pace is below y bpm or whatever.

    If you have teh HRM no harm in putting it on and seeing what it tells you.

    Excap, Hope you don't mind me highjacking your thread, but you seem happy enough with amadeus' reply.

    So, I bought the basic HRM Polar watch in the 26.2% sale a few months before DCM. On most of my runs I have been averaging a HR of anywhere from 165 to 179pm. This would be from an easy-ish to an all-out pace. I feel that it may be on the high side. Am I right in thinking that. I am not asking for medical advice - just wondering what other runners HR are? Everyone is different anyway.

    When I am sitting vegging my HR would be under 60bpm.

    This is pretty much a good summary of Parkes book " Heart monitor training for the compleat idiot" which I would thoroughly recommend. I got it as a beginner and still rate it one of the reasons why I went from couch to 4 marathons in 18 months without injury and steady progress:)
