    Hi Folks.
I am heading over to Edinburgh for Hogmanay this New Years.
If reports from every other Hogmanay are anything to go by, its gonna be Buckin’ Faltic.
So I’m looking to get myself a cheap but decent quality pair of Long Johns.(both men and woman's, for me and the missus)
Does anyone know where I’d pick up a pair?
I was hoping to do the kilt thing, but last year I believe it was minus 4 on New Years Eve!!!!!
    Thanks in advance!

Id say youd pick them up where old people shop - maybe Michael Guineys.

I noticed Penneys have a new thermal range which looked quite good. They had t-shirts and polos and I think tracksuit pants but they were very lightweight so you could wear under something else.

Horray for the 'New Posts' link, otherwise I'd never have seen this thread.

OP: find a shop that caters for the 'serious' camping/outdoors/climbing/skiing market, full-length underwear in all sorts of fancy modern high-tech materials have been standard equipment for these activities for years.

I found the penneys thermal range pretty rubbish. wore thermal long johns and long sleeve top under 10 other layers of clothes at electric picnic this year and still frooze at night in my tent....and that wudnt be near as cold as NY in Scotland....!

Marks and Spencer have a good range. Dunnes have them too.

Check out the 'base layer' offerings from Lowe Alpine and Helly Hansen and the like.

This sort of stuff is is designed to keep people alive in real 'life or death' situations, which may or may not apply to Hogmanay in Edinburgh :D

M&S. And yes, definitely wear thermals for hogmanay...you're going to be standing in Princes St gardens for a looong time and it's not only very cold in Edinburgh in December, but also you get cold winds coming in off the North Sea which makes it even colder!

Tip - bring a hip flask of whisk(e)y.

Debenhams have a good selection of all thermals.

Pennys have some (Both black and white). The best one are probably in the specialist out door shops. Or buy online if you know which brands to get.

My brother was over there for it a year or two ago and he swears by those hand warmers. Said he had them in his shoes and all for a while to keep his toes warm!!

I've often just used normal leggings under my clothes and while they do work well, I've found the Canterbury outdoor sportswear absolutely fantastic, both for playing sports and for wearing under normal clothes. Wore them to the Leinster v Dragons match last winter when it was absolutely freezing (the 'hot' whiskey got cold between the time it was poured and got to my lips!) and I wasn't cold (though I did wear copious layers and 2 warm jackets).

As has been suggested above, try the outdoor clothing shops as they're specifically designed to keep in the heat!

For cheaper options try some of the shops mentioned above, as well as Arnotts bargain basements. I got some woollen thermals there are reasonable prices last year.

Personally, I'd spend more on decent stuff than getting the pennys stuff

Get thee to great outdoors, upstairs in the ski section. Should have plenty of selection!
