DCU to be affected by upcoming strike?

I know there's a great debate going on over in the TCD forum about this, but has anyone in DCU heard anything from lecturers about what's going to be happening on Tues 24th? I don't have many lectures, but the few I have are crucial.

Tuesday is my practical day, I hope it's not affected. :(

I know the national media has (understandably) been focused on the affect of the strike on schools, but DCU should really be telling us whats going on. Particularly if they are planning to reschedule lectures and practicals etc. I hope they will reschedule classes or else I'll be really annoyed!!!

Same, though the lab is pretty much run by the postgrads anyway so it shouldn't really make difference :o

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

It's ridiculous. I have to pay six and a half grand for my college course, and I'm going back to college because I was made redundant due to the recession. I'd gladly have taken a paycut rather than lose my job. I feel very hard done by after paying so much money out of my savings to go back to college and losing an entire day because lecturers can't face the reality that the whole country is in recession . We're all in the same boat...deal with it.

I'll be happy to be off Tuesday because I'm in college from 9 till 6 then in work from 9 till 1.

I just wish it was any other day! I need my practical days, I get precious little of them anyway.

Could they not strike on Friday or Monday? I'd love a 3-day weekend :pac:

I wouldn't worry about it until I heard anything official personally

That I wouldn't mind as much;). Considering I have a four day weekend as it is!

You're absolutely right. It's so easy to get worked up about these things:). Hopefully there'll be an official announcement next week to clear everything up.

    From SIPTU:
    SIPTU Ballot on Industrial/Strike Action

Both TCD and UCD members have voted for Strike Action on Nov 24th

Have your Say and Vote !

    ‘Lunchtime’

    Today - Friday 13th Nov, 12.30 - 2.30 pm

    HENRY GRATTAN ATRIUM

    also

    Monday 16th, 12 - 2 pm

Please bring your SIPTU membership card or a copy of a recent payslip confirming payment of your SIPTU membership fee

So there'll probably be arrangements announced once the Trade Union gives official notice of strike action.

would it mean that there would just be no lectures or is the whole college shutting down? what about facilities like the library, resturants, su, bar, gym etc

One of the lecturers told me today that we won't be in that day for the strike.

But wait for the official letter

So does this mean we're in? I didn't think lecturers would want to cross a national picket line..

I suppose it depends on how everyone else votes. I get the feeling that some of the unions are beginning to lose face with their members because the unions are pushing so hard for a strike.

If DCU voted no, hopefully they'll be open to rearranging classes etc. Does anyone know if the strike is a full day strike or just a few hours in the morning/ afternoon?

Delighted with that result, hopefully there won't be any disruption.

I'm on INTRA, does anybody know that if DCU where to close due to lecturers striking, would I not have to go to work?

    Are you serious...?

How on earth would you come to that conclusion? Unless you're doing your INTRA working for DCU then why wouldn't you have to go to work?

Well... since you asked, I assumed because the INTRA office would be closed, everyone on INTRA was closed to.

    Hows that sound INTRA buddies?

Doesn't look that way unless DCU lecturers actually are going to pass a national picket line.

Here are the final SIPTU figures : http://www.siptu.ie/PressRoom/NewsReleases/2009/Name,11268,en.html

Even though DCU's members voted against it they will have to go with the majority vote nationally which was for the strike.

DCU staff voted against taking industrial action... the Union have confirmed that it will be a normal day at DCU.... is no strike. If you come across any lectures cancelled as a result of the strike you should contact the Head of Department and formally complain.

Siptu members in workplaces where a majority voted "no" in the ballot will not be taking part in the strike. However, the union did not provide details of the locations where members voted not to go on strike. It is known that Siptu members in Dublin City University voted against taking part in the strike action by almost two thirds to one third.

    from here

Fingers crossed it's business as usual so. I wonder if the majority of public sector workers are actually as enthusiastic about this strike as the unions want them to be ;)
