Claiming Tax Back

    Hi,

I am a third level student and I had a summer job for 3 months in which I paid tax.
How do I go about claiming my tax back? I dont want to use taxback.com.
I created a Revenue Online Account but as far as I can see its just for claiming credits.
I'm sure this question is answered already but I haven't been able to find where!

    Thanks!!

The best way to do it is to send a letter to your local tax office to say that you will not be working for the rest of the year and you wish to claim your unused tax credits against the tax you have paid. You will need to also send in a copy of your P-45.

are you not able to do this over the phone?

If you are not in employment you will not receive any tax back until next year. You can only receive tax back for the current year if you take up employment as your refund will be received through your wages. Otherwise you have to wait until next year and apply for a review for 2009.

I send one of these away every year. They send out your balancing statement and a cheque (if your lucky) within a couple of days.. Got over 500 back for 2008 as i didnt work a whole year.. They can back date about 4-5 years...

    Dear Sir/Madam,

I would appreciate it if you could calculate a balancing statement on my tax credits from the year (insert years) to the present date.
    My PPS number is (pps).

    Many Thanks

(add your address and full name ant the end..)

I use this same e-mail every year!!

Indeed, however id say if your claiming four years every year a lot of those balancing statements have a balance of 0.00!

That's great mate, I'm gonna do that now. Definitely due some tax back for 2008. How long does it take them to get back to you?

You could be talking 5 days to 2 months..Impossible to tell with revenue.Especially at this time of year..normal waiting time is around 6 weeks.

Obv you only claim your four years back the first time... Then just do it for the year passed every other year..

As I said anything, from 5 days to 2 months. It just depends on how many years you are claiming back and how complex/how many employments you had etc... I also have had refunds with 3 weeks..just depends how lucky you are are or how unlucky you are.

Will there be any indication by email that my request has been processed, or do I just wait for the cheque to arrive?

I don't think you'll get a 2nd email when your request has been processed, confirming that your claim is dealt with. Just expect your Balancing Statement in the post.

There's nothing to stop you emailing to check up on it's status though!

Yeah, I might do that or else ring in a few days.

What tax am I claiming with a balance statement? Is it just PAYE or does it include PRSI? I only worked for 3-4 months in the year full time, so I'm guessing I'm not liable to pay any tax at all?

Havn't really got a clue when it comes to stuff like this

Claiming tax back is claiming PAYE with Revenue.
Prsi is Social Welfare in Oisin House, Dublin.

    Exactly as said above.

The PRSI won't even appear on your P21, its your taxable incomes, and reliefs, credits etc that will appear on this.

    Hey everyone.

Had heard about the P50 form which is available for download from Revenue.ie and decided to fill it out and bring it into the Dublin Tax Offic just off O'Connell street. This was to make sure I was up to date with my tax and hadn't overpaid or even possibly underpaid.

I thought I may have been owed a small bit and asked the girl to check for 2009 which she then explained i was owed in the region of 900 euro. I was gobsmacked. She then asked what way I would like to be paid, by cash or into my bank account.

She suggested I check for my previous years dating back to 2005 and at the end of my meeting with her I was told I would be receiving some money back. When I asked how much she would not tell me straight out but had a cheeky grin on her face and said It was a fair amount...

This was last Thursday morning and I'v just checked my bank account and am delighted to say that E 3030.84 cent has been lodged... Service was excellent...

So many people forget about their tax and what they can claim and are owed so thought I'd share this for those who may be a little confused...

    Best of luck

    :)

I still havn't heard anything back from my email. Might have to go in myself I guess. Of course I mightn't be due anything(pretty sure I am though) but I can't tell seeing as there's no auto response or anything to even let you know they're looking at your query..

I recon the best thing to do is ring them at 1890 333 425, and get them to check for ya.

Now guys i work for this crowd, don't get me wrong the link provided in some previous posts might be all above board (dublin4@revenue.ie) but after a couple of years of working there i've never given out or heard of that email address. It could be the case that that email address is no longer in use and you would be waiting on a refund that would never appear.

Plus it all depends on what area you live in so just check www.revenue.ie under their contacts heading just to be on the safe side.

Registering @ paye online speeds the whole process up. Put in your bank details and send an email asking them for your balancing statment for whatever years you think your due the refund. They'll send you an email when its done and let you know when you're refund has been sent to your account!:pac::pac:
