Under the guise of a new "motor tax" a system is being implemented in Holland that will rate cars by the distance they travel. It is aimed at reducing traffic jams, fatal accidents and of course "carbon emissions".

Basically a "big Brother" system that will utalse GPS tracking to log the time, hour and place each car moves and send the data to a billing agency. Movements will be logged on a national database for up to two years under EU data retention.

No doubt that Holland will be a test state for this very intrusive form of taxation an it will eventually spread right across the EU Superstate.

I read up on this recently, their proposing to split up the roads in to 5 categories, the actual locations of the cars aren't recorded, the categories are and then the drivers billed accordingly,

The system will not work satisfacry without the knowledge of the cars whereabouts, ie for monitoring congestion charges, accident locations, etc.

No doubt this systm will also be able to spit out automated point to point speeding fines when it is set up.

Or you could look at it in the way that people who drive the most will pay the most road tax, while people who leave their car in the driveway will pay little tax. I'd suspect that's the way it's intended.
Logging movements is no use to any other agency unless the EU data protection laws have been abolished recently.

theres already a system that already works

it was developed by the germans (siemens/ daimler chrysler if i remember correct) at the cost of 100s of millions for exactly this purpose for truck tolls on motorways. Google toll collect for info.
They now collect a few billion a year in tolls and theres never been a mishap (aside from the system being about a year late and costing the government a few billion in lost revenue which didnt go down well at the time!!)

Not sure if the dutch are looking to reinvent the thing or use the german system.

In principle its not a bad system but in germany they do it a much simpler way and just charge about 10 to 15c surcharge on fuel compared to neighbouring countries, so essentially the more you drive the more you contribute.
(currently petrol is 135 in Germany so if you compare that to irish prices you'll see the "surcharge" in action!)

Brilliant idea!! They should do the same for insurance too.
It's not fair that a person who uses their car less should pay the same road tax as one who uses their car every day. Though I suppose in reality a surcharge on petrol woud do the same thing.

seems a very over complex Solution for such a simple thing.....

Surely easier hust to scrap motor tax, and money to petrol.... like say a carbon tax... the more you drive the more you pay... the less you drive the less you pay....
likeswise the more efficeint your car the less you pay....the more inefficient your car the more you pay.....

    problem solved :)

by the way.... is this the new transport forum???
