Laptop warranties

    Hi all,

I just got a new laptop. It comes with Wondows Vista. Like most laptops, mine comes with a warranty but I have been told that the warranty is void if I try change the operating system in any way, except for if I upgrade to Windows 7.

I was just wondering, if I was to switch from Windows to another OS and then something went wrong, would I be able to put Vista back on it and claim the warranty? Like I know they could check and see when Vista was installed, but the question is would they botherto check or woul they just see that it had Vista on it and fix/replace it?

    Thanks.

    Yes. Absolutely.

I've worked in support for a long time and I can't see anyone bothering to check. Even if they did, it would look like you just reinstalled the OS, not that you'd had something else on there previously.

Sorry to contradict but if someone was sufficiently motivated they could check for previous filesystems from other OSs (e.g. ext3 or ext4 for linux). But you're right nobody would ever bother checking so fire away and install another OS if that's what you want to do.
Ubuntu or Linux Mint are my faves at the minute. the new ubuntu 9.10 release ha super fast bootup / shutdown times and some great new features :-)

I have never heard of a warranty being voided is the OS is changed. Can you find it in the warranty docs? It sounds very odd to me.

It's not voided, they just won't support the hardware until the original operating system is restored and a problem is then proven to still exist. For this reason, the OS is almost treated as a hardware component.

No worries. It's a pain in the ass, but one that the support people are told to do. At least nowadays you can let the support chap remote in and do it himself rather than having him dictate instructions over the phone. Leave them at it and get a cuppa. :)

The part about the warranty being void is more to do with software support.

When I worked in tech is just a matter of we would not support problems within OS that the system was shipped with. For obvious reasons like drivers and compatibility. Hardware wise you would be fine.

They may require you to put the original OS back on if you are having Vid problems within the OS, Network issues, or modem problems.
