The table Silvo posted above is (I think anyway, I may be wrong) based on samples of 'normals' (i.e non-athletes) - so it's good for comparing yourself against the general population.

For more sports specific comparisons, maybe try using Google Scholar to find some more relevant datasets. Just to get you started, data from the Australian cycling programme from a few years back has their female senior track endurance riders at an average of 62 ml.kg.min, and their female senior road squads from different years at 64 and 72 ml.min.kg. So somehting to aim at there :-)

Like you say, there's a million different datasets out there and a million opinions on what's bad/avergae/good etc. Every sports scientist has their own conclusions. A rough summary would be that for young-ish women, something in the 40s would be pretty good (i.e. aerobically fit and healthy), in the 50s would be really quite good (i.e. a well trained athlete), and in the 60s would be pretty impressive (i.e. elite). Massive generalisation obviously.

And then there's the whole argument about how VO2max is an irrelevant measure anyway....

Hi caroline, let us know your results when you get them back. Had V02 measured last spring. 62.5 ml.kg.min. Like yourself found quite a bit of variation from online tables etc but StudentC has give some nice advice in previous post and will have a look using Google Scholar

    ehhhh no...... thats not right

average male cat 2 cyclist in ireland Vo2 of about 55ml/kg/min for a 70kg male

60ml/kg/min = bottom end of well trained

70+ moving towards high trained -> elite nearer the 80ml/kg/min

Caroline_ie - if you want some info feel free to pm

I'm no expert in the field, but I got the figures from a JINGO (Joint Irish Nutrigenomics Organisation) study report from the UCD Institute for Sport and Health. As StudentC said previously, perhaps the scales are used for non-athletes.
