How cheap, at what sort of comfort level, and for how many people? Are we talking hostels, or two-star hotels?

Have stayed in both of these -
    www.hostaladriasantaana.com/ and www.hostalpersal.com .

Both very good - if a little basic. Hostal Adria is nicer. The Santa Ana area is brilliant for great bars and nightlife, and is within walking distance of most tourist attractions.

if there are a few of you it might be worth getting an apartment, that's why we did last month

stayed here very central cheap enough, fairly basic and little noisy, there are lots of other options

I stayed in the Persal earlier this year, and thought it great value for money. I can't comment on the Adria. Both are in very good locations.

Stayed in Hostal Gallardo myself its on Hotels.com and was cheapest i could find and is right in the centre of the city with a metor station 2 minutes away. A basic hotel but staff speak no english at all which was the most difficult part
