    any views on this ?

I think it had to happen. The airlines need to do some serious cost reducing and merging seems to be the obvious way.

I'm surprised no one has come in for EI yet tbh.

With FR holding a big chunk, no one will. And it's unlikely that they will sell to a competitor.

FR Only hold 20% don't they? if a company bought 60% they could force FR to sell.

EI has LHR, ORD and JFK slots. they must make them an attractive proposition. Personally, I think the new BA/Iberia group will make a move once this merger has sorted itself out. the three of them could make some sizeable savings.

This BA Iberia merger has been talked about for years now. There are two things in the way. European approval and the reported BA's pension deficit of £2.7bn. If this £2.7bn figure is correct then there will be no merger.

FR has 29%. Govt has 25%. Staff have 19%(including pilots group)

So there is really only 37% up for grabs. No airline/consortium is going to invest unless there is a way for A) FR to be forced to sell holding or B) Govt to sell their stake with attached conditions for new airline/consortium.

Think the LHR slots are the main asset. If the EU can force FR to sell then we might see LH, BA/IB or AF/KL making a bid for EI. While they are a small airline they have a good brand in Europe and strong market share in JFK/BOS/ORD.

And the Ryanair embargo/ban thingy on bidding for EI runs out at the end of Jan. Mick says he won't try again and he is a proven man of his word...right?
