Okay, its not a life & death situation, & there are far more important issues at large, but here goes.

Did you ever buy a bottle of vinegar & assumed it had the 'stopper' at the neck, just like in the chippers?

Well I have a bottle of 'Chef' vinegar here & have just ruined a perfectly good meal cos they were too scabby to put a proper 'vinegar stop' on the bottle.

I'm sure this has happened to most people out there at some time or other!

Anywho, I'm boycotting 'Chef' vinegar till further notice.

Any vinegar makers out there who supply the correct stoppers nowadays?

Is this too much to ask?

i hate this too!!! And then you spend about 10 minutes trying to pierce a hole in the cap of the vinegar without losing a finger!!

    Hate that..

Plus I still double check that the lid is tight on any vinegar bottle I ever use.. Back in the days of secondary school, ya had to check and it's stuck with me. I could be in a 5 star hotel and still do it.

we have this weird metal spike thing for corn that i poke through the top. having said that, i just don't buy chef anymore. Nearly stabbed myself with that spike thing once...
    scary!

Did you check the top of the bottle before you poured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭TequilaMockingBird

Rookie mistake. You need a phillips screwdiver and twist action for optimum sprinklage. Never use a knife.

    Obviously not!

But, didn't vinegar makers used to supply a top on their bottles to prevent this kind of 'malfunction'?

Or is it just 'Chef' that are the the main culprits in this regard?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 797 ✭✭✭john-joe

Why don't they put the vinegar into spray bottles like the one below, that way one squirt and you can hit all the chips in one go ;)

That was back in the olden days. During the Celtic Tiger they expected you to decant it into a Nigella Lawson vinagerette bottle (RRP €34.99). I predict a return to the plastic widget soon. That's if the banks haven't got them...

Guys guys, all you need to do is get some tin foil and wrap it tightly on the top of the bottle; pierce a couple of holes in the tin foil and hey presto! a sprinkler for vinegar. Mind you, this is just a stop gap until Chef get their bottles in order :p

Chef would love this, as it's fairly likely you'll end up with half a bottle of vinegar on yer chips. Then you need to buy another, and another...

    Geniuses tbh.

you could always just use the same cap that you pierced before

That would be too simple , nevermind

Cover the top (or most of it) with your thumb, then shake away. God gave you hands for a reason & a brain to make good use of them. Sometimes you just gotta make that connection.

Very true. but I seem to remember that most bottles you bought had the stopper included.

Am I just being a bit 'old fogey' on this, or is Chef being grossly negligent/scabby on this very important issue?

Hands and eyes are great inventions. Possibly more so than the plastic stoppers which negate the apparent need to use them!

Can't see this one standing up to court scrutiny. You'd need Danny Crane to win this one.

I just made a guess to the situation & concluded that you indeed are an employee of the dark enterprise that is the evil CHEF,that ruins people's lives on a daily basis for no reason whatsoever, but for their own evil enjoyment.

    So there!

Jesus its true. It does annoy me.

Thats why I start buying sarsons(You can see the top on the sarsons one.Excluding the standard aldi/lidl sarsons) instead of chief. You think an additional note on the side of the bottle stopped included(For those without a vinager shaker) or no stoper(For those with a vinager shaker) would be achievable quite easy.

I done this twice in the one week... with the same vinegar bottle.

Both meals ruined but the second time I couldn't handle it and ate the entire dinner swimming in vinegar. :(

I buy sarsons vinegar. It has a sprinkler and with a flip lid on top- pure luxury:D

A warning to anyone who makes a hole in the lid of a vinegar bottle - don't leave the lid uncovered. Small flies are attracted to vinegar and will fall into it through the hole in the lid....... I will never forget the day I spotted a load of them in the clear vinegar that I had just used on my chips:( (Am still scarred by that one).. And if it's brown vinegar you won't even see them in the bottle..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,344 ✭✭✭Thoie

Handy tip - the widget from the Sarson's bottle pops off, so you can refill the bottle and reuse the widget! I use vinegar for both food and cleaning, so got a 5litre drum of vinegar, and just refill the Sarson's bottle for food as needed.

Sarsons has the spray top now too.

I didn't read any of the replies OP as I'm too lazy today. Many a meal has been ruined because of this. What the fcuk like?

It's on a par with putting salt on anything and the top comes off. Granted thats not a design fault but still fcuks me off no end.

Ah great stuff! Must bring one back with me next time I'm at home in Ireland, the one i have is running dangerously low and there's no such thing in shops here..
(when will the Danes recognise the 8th wonder of the world that is vinegar on chips??)

Chef is like the Russian roulette of the vinegar world. Sometimes they have a widget and sometimes not. It makes it all so exciting!! :D

Not sure about the spray thing, I use alot of vinegar I just can't see it getting enough on the chip's with out sitting there for a good five minutes spraying!!

Problem solved indeed! Went out after reading that and bought a small spray bottle from a chemist and filled it up. It's the ****ing business. Housemates thought it was weird before I explained what it was. Bottle of malt from tesco is only 40c.

Then I read that sarsons have it and now I just look like a dope with my mini travel perfume bottle filled with vinegar.
