I'm trying to connect my sky box to my laptop hopfully to access all of the recorded programs and movies to move them to the laptop... (then to the external hard drive)

There is a USB port on the back of the digi box... so if it can access the hard drive within the digi box... well that would be just super.

Does anyone know of anything about this? has it bein tryied befor? and what kinda format would the recorded movies and programs be in?

I'd love to know if anyone has ever done this befor.

    Andy

The USB port is not connected, so you cannot wire up a laptop to it. DVD recorder is the only way.

it could be a USB master port, in which case hooking it tot he usb master port on your pc would do nothing, so it could be there for external storage in the future or firmware upgrades or something along those lines.

but what you have been already told is correct, you can't use the usb port

Whether the USB port works or not is a moot point - the files stored on the disk in the SKY+ box are encrypted and can't be played without a valid subscription card.

I have heard of some people connecting a USB powered fan to the Sky box to keep it cool.

It's handy for iPod charging too. :)

Currently it's not an active USB port, Sky say it's for "Future use".

Well, it's all still a little hush-hush, but the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources are working on a secret project in conjunction with Sky and NDS. This special USB device, when plugged into your Sky box, will give you all the Irish channels in HD for free.

I wish Sky would give us the same freedom as Tivo does in America. With a Tivo box, you can wirelessly send recored content to your PC and even make MP4 files from the content to put on your iPod/PSP etc. That's what I'd love to see in future Sky boxes/Firmware.

You will never EVER get something like that, considering Rupert Murdoch has just given the following interview.

His comments on Google 'stealing' from him are laughable, and his crusade against 'fair use'.. Not someone you can ignore either, sadly.

I think you are getting confused with what Sky Italia are bringing out. http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2009/10/20/usb-key-brings-lost-channels-back-to-sky-italia/

True but he talks only of his newspaper websites which make damn all money anyway. (correct me if Im wrong as I did not watch the full video).

The main reason that Sky wont do it is because they dont exactly have to. They have no serious competition, in Ireland anyway. The VOD service will be making use of the ethernet port on the Sky HD box, but Id rather an easy way to get content off the HDD than a VOD service which I probably have to pay extra for.
