I don’t know anything about Turveys finances but I hope it stays open.

In my opinion Turvey should be based on a kind of cheap and cheerful model, they already offer well priced green fee’s €15 during the week and €20 or so at weekends. Membership there should be cheaper than your Corrstown, St. Margaret’s and so on, say under the €1,000 mark and I feel quite a few floating golfers would join. I really feel there’s a market just above the price of public courses, your elmgreen’s and Corballis’s and than below the other courses name above which are around the €1500 mark and make it a proper club catered for members (e.g comps every sat & sun and not just 3 Sundays a month)

I played it on a lovely summers day and enjoyed the course, can’t say I know what its like during the winter.

Good luck to them cause i dont want to see another club join the faith of luttrellstown.

I know a couple of members in Turvey, so here are some facts on the club. The members bought the club with the help of a loan of 6M from the bank. The loan has not been serviced, and therfore the club is in deep financial trouble. They tried to implement a number of big levies on the members over the last 18mnths, and lost quite a few because of it. There was rumors of a land deal been struck, with a developer, which did not happen, but somebody has taken over the running of the Hotel and Club bar. It's a smashing young course, in a lovely area, but the future does not look too bright for it.

Have to say I think its a decent course and they are doing the right thing by being realistic with their green fees. Dont want to see anymore closures so lets hope they work something out. There is a par 3 on the back nine there where you hit between two large oak trees. Excellent hole. One of my favourites of any course ive played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 MYMY

The guy that took over the hotel was a chancer and only brought hope to the members for a short time. He has left them in a worse postion now, so not looking good!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭rafared

Would be a shame if this course went under......it has some very nice holes. Has anybody an update on the situation?

Just heard Turvey have made an agreement with the bank,
Great to hear they are hanging in

We should have a bit of a boards outing down there to help them out, know it wouldn’t be much in the general scale of things, 10-12 green fees, maybe not even! I know there’s many better courses around but would like them to stay open and I’d say they need every bit of help going…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 MYMY

Good news that they're hanging in there, hopefully they'll be alright.

As regards the outing, count me out.Lets just say it's not one of my favourite courses.;)

Hi to all you board users who wanted to know what was happening at Turvey Golf Club in Donabate. I can confirm that they are not closing or in financial trouble the club have appointed me as their new general manager we have just refurbished the bar the bedrooms and opened a new restaurant. So if you would like to come down and see the facilities say you are from boards.ie and you can get a reduced green fee price of €15 all day. Offer valid until 31st May - unless you want to get a board society outing and we can look at doing you a deal!

Look forward to seeing you all there

    Aoife

Played here today and the course is in absolute tatters. Tee boxes on half the holes are a shambles, serious pole forking marks still evident on the greens, and the greens are sanded like a bunker. Plus the 2nd or maybe 3rd is being re-done and is literally like playing through a building site. A couple of interesting holes, but I will not be returning.

Give em a break obviously there doing work on the course, greens have to be hollow cored and sanded if they want to keep em or get them in any shape for the year, as long as you can stick a tee in the ground and put yer ball on it what more does one want from a tee box

    Cut grass? Level ground?
And of course every course needs to be maintained, but its May now. Most clubs are well over hollow coring by now. BTW, there is no justification for the amount of sand on it.

Deed and there not, was in that up hill down dale concra woods 2 weeks ago and greens were only being done, mind you in their case it was the opposite there wasn't near enough sand on them, I'd say if you ask a green keeper the more sand you can get out the better.

You cant be overly critical of Turvey, green fees there are €15 (weekdays). Seriously you cant expect the world for €20 a round on a Sunday. That's cheaper than any of the public courses...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭[DM]Frink

I played turvey there two weeks ago and it was fine, fair enough on either side of the 3rd hole short par 4 you have muck mounds on both sides but i didnt find the course in that bad shape.....greens were alright. Plus were there was muck you got relief.

You also have to remember we never had such a bad icy winter than what we had this year so a lot of the courses are behind in green keeping!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,527 ✭✭✭brick tamland

I've played it a few times and while its not the best course I've ever player for e15/20 its great value considering you'd pay more to get round Elm Green or Sillouge. Not the longest but some nice holes on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 634 ✭✭✭rafared

Ive always enjoyed Turvey whenever I've played it. Its not in the top level of courses but its enjoyable, not too difficult and the staff sre friendly....plus it doesnt cost the earth which always helps.

Green Fees in Silloge are very similar to Turvey: €15 before 10:30 Mon to Fri and €20 thereafter. Twilight Rate of €18 3hrs before closing and €10 for 9 holes after 5:30pm. €26 at the weekends.

Course is in great condition at the moment.

I heard that Turvey had closed last week. Something about them being in debt so the bank have called time and the debt wasn't big enough for NAMA to keep them going.

Anyone know if this is true?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,003 ✭✭✭Kevinmarkham

I spoke to the club a couple of weeks back and I called them again following your post. They say they're still going strong and are only closed cos of the snow (like everywhere else).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,910 ✭✭✭couerdelion

    Ok, that's good news. :)

I guess that the snow isn't doing many favours to any of the struggling clubs.

    Good answer.

And back in May,there was very little growth, hence many of the complaints that this answer referred to.

With regards to "perfect" maintenace on this course and others: Get over it. You'll have to.

I heard we are going have a heatwave tomorrow but doesn't mean it is true

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭Vego

Ok then lets just say its a fact that the banks have called in the loan
Agm next week if that heatwave happens to wind it all up......Then again a millionaire could step in and save it

I joined Turvey as a 5 day member in October for 850 euro for 15 months (3 months free as a special offer) and i have to say it`s a great course and there is certainly nothing easy about it particularly the par 3`s.
With regard to the club being in financial difficulties as far as i`m aware most if not all golf clubs in Dublin are in some sort of financial difficulty and in fact Turvey managed to get over 50 new members this year so thats a positive sign.
I was at the club today and they are open this week so get yourself down there and get in a game for 15 euro......biggrin.gif

So with kpmg arriving at the club does that mean you lose your money or just on hold?

Can`t get any straight answers from anyone in the club so to be honest with you i haven`t got a clue whats going on at the moment.Played Turvey last Tuesday and noticed the security guards on the premises but as i said i have no idea whats going on...hopefully its stays open or i`m €850 out of pocket....

True, not all golf clubs landed themselves in serious debt building extravagant unused clubhouses.

Got the same email. It would be nice to know what is going to happen if the receiver is going to keep it open even if it is a pay & play course. Although with the weather at the moment and that my back is in a heap I can wait a few weeks to find out. I would hate to see it go.

No I don't mate as I posted I am laid up with back so have not seen any of the members since the meeting in Dec. If I do find out I will post here> If anyone else find out any information then perhaps they will do the same if anything it will keep me busy besides daytime tv. lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

It's a pity that the guys involved with the running of the Turvey Golf Club who were only too keen to come on here over the past couple of years championing the place and waxing lyrical about why people should join, can't come on now and clarify the situation for members etc.

No doubt they're probably still lurking around - if you are, how about putting some minds at rest?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2 tigerspudz

they are lurking about, i was up at club today and they were having a
meeting. a sign on the door , closed until further notice. i was told club
in recievership and banks have taken over:mad: there were 2 people taking small advertising signs from each of the carts for rent as if there expecting the carts to be taken away very soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 Tourdriver

At least you got an e mail i haven`t heard a bloody word from the club as to what the hell is going on but a mate who joined with me in October called down to the club today and it was closed with a notice on the front door saying closed until further notice. He had a word with the security guards but couldn`t get any answers from them so we are still in the dark as to what happens next.By the way when we joined we were assured that the club was in fine financial form which was obviously a lie so thats an exspensive lesson learned.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Phoenix Park

This is Ireland 2010/2011 buddy, almost everywhere you could have joined is not without risk. Any deposits you put on, any gift vouchers you buy.... doesn't matter what it is in relation to, there's always that risk of something capitulating unfortunately. Hope things sort themselves out.

Interesting one poster said that the members took out a 6M loan to buy the club (is that correct?), if the loan is not being serviced is the bank now going to pursue the members?.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭Vego

Appointed receiver is k.p.m.g like I said before
