knee pain doing breaststroke

Hi there. I just wondered if anyone has any advice on how to avoid knee pain whilst swimming breaststroke? I have only recently started swimming regularly having previously only played around in the pool. I have been swimming daily for the past week and trying to increase the amount of lengths as I go. I am up to between 1200 and 1400 meters and loving the challenge this is for me. Currently I can only do 340 meters without stopping for breath but hope this will increase with practise. My only problem is I am experiencing knee pain for the past few days when I start off. I take it easy for the first ten minutes or so to try and loosen up before I start pushing myself harder but that doesnt seem to be helping. I was hoping someone with a bit of experience might be able to advise me on the best course of action. Thanks

Hopefully someone else will have a more constructive comment but I had to begin avoiding swimming breaststroke for the same reason :( Breaststroke kick requires a very unnatural leg position, and this problem is common enough.

I'd only do breaststroke now ifI was doing IMs, never continuous lengths like you seem to be doing. Having said all this though, my knee also began to bother me when I took up running a few years ago and I found the physio a great help. She gave me loads of strengthening exercises, mostly for gluts and core in order to improve my biomechanics of running. Not sure if these would carry across to swimming though....haven't been brave enough to try!!

Yes this is a common problem especially in the current forms of breaststroke in competitive swimming where the kick is whip kick from the knees.

Make sure to alternate around the kick and not just do continuous breast stroke. Also a possible help may be to kick your legs out farther apart and push back more from your hips and thighs as opposed to your knees. Admittidly I haven't seen your stroke.
