Im a second year in NUI reading arts, recently some close family members passed away, along with a few other things. Ive been diagnosed with depression, and reciving treatment. I was late starting collage and worked for few years before hand. Im now 23, I thinking off defering colage for a year. Ive spoken with the student union and there dosent seem to be a problem wih defering. But Im worried what Im going to do for money. I have been working over the summer. But im not working now. I will also have o repay my grant. Im very worried about money. I dont know if I qualify for social welfare. Some one metioned I might be better off getting a sick cert when I apply for welfare.

If you are being treated for depression you *may* be entitled to disability allowance. I'm not sure how much this is.

Hey OP, was in college in UCD, had to take a year off to have a baby, I got Jobseekers from 6 weeks after the baby was born, but I had to prove I was only on a year off. If you have the paper work behind you then they should give you something, if you get treatment for your depression then attempt to claim disability, I have had to show the Social Welfare Office that I have been trying to secure employment, if you are very depressed I dare say you will not be very available for work and that may affect your payments on JSA!

To claim JB or JA the op will have to be available for and genuinely seeking full-time work. if the person is suffering from depression - you could qualify for Illness Benefit providing you meet the medical criteria and have sufficient numbers of RSI contributions. If not you can then make an application for Disability Allowance which is a means tested payment. The conditions are that the illness has lasted or is expected to have lasted for at least one year.

A social welfare inspector will do a detailed assessment of your household income, including any income from you or you partner, alternative properties, savings and investments. If you are in receipt of JA, Jb, illness benefit or disability allowance and you satisfy the means test you may be qualified for the GMS or the doctors only visit card.

I would go to your college uni to defer your college placement. Its important that you talk to your personal tutor or course director before you make any final decisions. I know from previous experience that if you withdraw before christmas you will only be liable for the first symester fees on your return - in my uni for the second symester I went back to as if it was my first time attending - no more fees. Uni's understand and I would advise that you draw on all supports that you need through college. If you have been in receipt of social welfare for a sufficient period of time you can claim BTEA which means you can retain your benefits and all secondary entitlements and attend college and work part or full-time.
