My 02 has 75k miles and I have not had the belt done yet.

    Is this a bit risky?

They recommend around 60k miles per belt. Mine was changed at 57k miles and now at 115k miles I might change it again before x-mas. By X-mas there will be 120k miles on it.

75k miles would be like me waiting till I'm at 150k miles. That would make me slightly nervous.

A bit risky is an undertatement. If, (as proven above) the timing belt snaps or as is more common the tensioner fails/seizes, and valve to piston damage occurs, the engine is effectively a write-off.

Im a VW technician by trade, but work independently now and recommend the belt gets replaced at 60-65,000K. Fairly handy job to do also...

    Hi Lord Jules,
Im assuming the timing belt has caused valve to piston damage? Have you the new engine? I work as an independent mechanic with 8 years VW/Audi experience and would be willing to quote you for the job and I guarantee you a massive saving against the main dealers...

    I don't think VAG do a standard 1.8.
