    just a heads up

Maybe a slight over reaction by Raz

    Thread in console modding.

I got banned. If you can't do the time don't do the crime and all that.

I care not about having no more xbox live, but an xbox live ban should NOT result in Microsoft disabling a feature that has nothing to do with XBOX live (Banned users with the latest dashboard cannot install games to their hard drive). This is the most significant thing for me and has truly pwned a lot of people.

They should be even more strict imo and brick the consoles...
Should teach the cheeky bastards for playing online with pirated games

I'm 50-50 on whether they should have bricked the consoles tbh. Really is nothing short of cheeky putting them online though. No sympathy.

Serves em right really, cheat and get caught, and you get f*cked like you should do.

    Proper order.

If you were messing with the console then you knew the risks and this was always going to happen some day

Have heard that there is new firmware on the way next week to combat this.

if you get banned from live is it your account that gets banned or is it your xbox itself?

You get console banned. Recover your gamertag to another console (because the one on the banned console will be corrupt) and play away. You will lose acheivements earned since you last connected to Live.

It's on hold. Nobody has any idea how Microsoft detected firmware. But this is a discussion best left for the modding forum :)

Ah ok. So is it through the MAC address they ban you?

ConsoleID, which is built on your manufacturing date & MAC address. Hard/Impossible to spoof and get away with :D

Didn't this happen the last several times? How hard would it be for microsoft to slip in a update which will read the firmware directly off the dvd drive, if it is modified Microsoft should be able to see this easily, as they would have checksum matches of official factory firmwares and could compare them to the modified ones, just a thought..

They can. They will always be able to. They built the machine ffs.

The reason they don't insta-ban people for having a modded f/w is that it is a very finely balanced cash cow for M$. They ban in waves, same time every year, to generate christmas sales of new xboxes. They flag people throughout the year and drop the "ban hammer" over a 72 hour period. Same thing every year. I was banned on Monday, but I was probably flagged a couple of months ago. The reason they don't insta-ban is they would kill the modding scene. They let people play away all year in their false sense of security, paying a year's XBL membership each as they do. They make millions from modders, without it costing them a whole lot.

So I'll wait for this to blow over, buy a new xbox and get the new firmware, and play for another year unperturbed. I know this because M$ is a money-hungry kunt who don't give a shíte about the games developers who piracy actually hurts; moreover they just want to make 10% extra per year in new console sales to banned users. That's why it's no surprise that they haven't banned Xbox Live ID's, leaving every user with a reason to rebuy a new console.

The way I see it, €120 per year for a new console isn't bad for 50 odd games.

LOL. So what should MS do if they do care about developers? Ban you straightaway? It's almost like they're trying to make money off the console, the ****ers.

I miss the days when games consoles manufacturers weren't about the money, they just wanted to bring a little happiness to the world.

I think you just insulted yourself there too, since you admit to pirating games.

You guys get what you deserve if your console gets banned.

Basically, yeah. If they cared about the development houses they would act immediately, but cost themselves millions... So they won't be doing that anytmie soon. The people who modify their xboxes are never gonna pay full whack, for anything, and M$ have accepted that. It's like a nightclub letting people in when they know they're sneakin a naggin in in their handbag/pocket. They might as well make the cover charge, cloakroom fee, and mixer costs from them, otherwise they won't come at all. If M$ banned immediately these people would just stop playing xbox, coz they've obviously gone to some bother not to pay full price for the games.

Well spotted... No flies on you.

EDIT: ... and if we're being technical; No I didn't. I simply stated I was banned - for what violation of terms I didn't say - then expressed an opinion on the thought process behind a "pirate"'s (ARRRR) actions. Never once did I discuss doing anything illegal personally.

And just how much do MS actually make from the sale of a new console?

If it's sold to the retailer at ~€180 for full Elite set; I would imagine somewhere around €150-160? I dunno, I'm open to correction on this from someone who knows (unlikely tbh). Factor in XBL etc and it's a few quid per modder.

He said 'I sign in online next thing I see your console has been banned'. I was destraught at the time. I was completely gutted. Its like telling someone their dog just died

Well I guess if they are making the XBox for as little as $20 then that may explain some of the manufacturing faults. :D

just want to ask about what he said

"To be honest, I've contemplated whether to move to Playstation 3 or buy another Xbox. I wouldn't do it again but I really don't know if I'm going to get the Xbox again now."

But as the ps3 can't be modded do you think a lot of people will move to it
if my 360 or ps3 died without any comeback for a return i would buy a new one as i have a lot of games for them.
but when it's pirated games that will just get you banned again and won't work on a unmodified 360 there's noting keeping someone from moving to ps3.

will these people go legit with a new system and have to buy the games this time.
change to ps3 and still buy real games
    or keep pirating

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭EGriff

I think you keep all your achievements and your gamertag, friends list ect, So i guess thats a reason to just replace the xbox itself.

Same thing happened when Halo 3 came out, surprised this is on the front page.

it could be worse for these people if they used a credit card for the live fee

it has your real name and address

we f**k your 360 now pay us for damages

This is the first time Microsoft have banned over half a million. It's a lot of people to get banned, much more than any other wave before it. There is even talk this is not a wave at all, more an implementation of a new policy because they've finally got firmware flashed xboxes dead to rights.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,330 ✭✭✭niallon

1 in 20 Live users had modded consoles though? That's insane! I feel I should have better weapons or something online due to the fact that there's a good chance most of the other feckers I'm playing against are playing for free!

    title incorrect

Microsoft ban 1 million Xboxes is what actually happened

all i can say is thank god.

there is someone on my friends' list i wont mention is name tho
and he has his xbox flashed and one of his xbox's got banned about a week ago, and he tried to sell the banned xbox for about 120euro. pray that no1 bought it.

he's using another xbox now that he kept as a spare incase he did get banned, smart*ss

he always tried to convince me to get my xbox flashed, by sayin im stupid for buyin games wen i can get them for free.........

as tempting as that sounded, id rather come out of gamestop/xtravision with my dignity intact. i have no problem buying games atol

I thought that article about Raz was a bit odd as well, but that could have been the point. Publish his comments to show how daft he is.

I'd say it's more likely that MS make a big show of this to gain the confidence of games publishers so that they don't abandon the console due to loss of revenue than some weird conspiracy to keep the modding community alive and forcing people to buy new consoles to play their stolen games on. Just sayin'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 763 ✭✭✭F-Stop

"I steal £600 worth of games and this is how they repay me?!"

OK, I don't believe that Raz would spend 600 pounds on games. He downloads 600 worth of games, but that's different. But supposing it was true that's 600,000,000 pounds worth of lost revenue, if the claim of 1 million getting banned is correct. That's hitting everyone from retailers, graphic designers, printers, transport, musicians, artists, coders, developers, publishers and of course Microsoft (and I'm sure many others too). In business terms, that is fcking collossal.

It's really not that surprising that people are complaining about how crappy the manual in CoD:MW2 is, me included.

EDIT: Actually I would easily buy a game per month, and at a conservative 45 euro per game that would come to 540 a year, so that's not too far off the 600 and I'm certainly not the hardest of core gamers.

consultech do you realise that if developers dont make enough from titles then they will go bank and if that happens gaming could end up in the history books!

a sham that this banning hasnt happened sooner!!

    well done MS:cool:

I'm actually laughing at the suggestion of M$ dropping their prices. Hard luck for not getting that, it was fairly apparent.

... and how do I "abuse" the system? Where have I ever associated myself with piracy (specifically)? I haven't.
