What would be the healthiest (lowest fat / sugar / salt etc) option on a standard Italian restaurant menu (pizza/pasta/salas etc)? I dread eating out for these reasons…

    Thanks!

Probably chicken ceasar salad with the dressing on the side.

You should never dread eating out for starters, pardon the pun.

I think a lot of italian food is quite healthy, but I'm guessing you're talking more about being calorie conscious, then Stay away from lasagne, Calzone or dishes with creamy sauces or loads of cheese. They normally would have some sort of chicken fillet in a tomato based sauce, which shouldn't be too bad. See if you can get wholemeal pasta and just get a plain pasta and chicken dish.

as far as I remember Chicken Ariabiatta (sp?) with NO cream is the lowest of weight watchers of the pasta dishes. Its tomato based and really very nice! :)

A lot of Italians I've been to don't just serve pizzas and pasta, they usually have a choice like chicken in a tomato kind of sauce with vegetables - or I used to get seabass. Probably the best thing on the menu!

Chicken caesar is so bad ..

It's not just the dressing. Its mainly the croûtons, followed by the cheese, rashers, chicken... Tis a recipe for disaster.
Just don't be fooled by this "salad" even if it is fu*kin delicious!!

I'd go for tomato based dish or maybe a small steak, one potato and veg veg veg.

    Goodluck :)

I go to weight watchers so if you have a big appetite I would say make a zero point tomato soup beforehand and eat a bowl so you're not that hungry going to the restaurant.basically if you use canned tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, herbs and veg stock in your recipe, this is zero points! Then if you're there, you can have the salad minus dressing and dont get a bread basket because if its on the table, you'll be tempted to eat the lot! and then for dessert, bring a piece of fruit with you which you can have afterwards or I also find solero ice lollys a good option-usually I pop into Spar/local shop to get one afterwards!- because they only have 100 calories/1.5 points if you do weight watchers! alternatively, just go for pasta arrabiata/chicken arriabiata/any tomato based dish or dish with no sauces. If you do go to a restaurant, only have a main course-tiramisu and garlic bread are v v high on calories! If you're in a traditional Italian restaurant like Dunne & Cruscenzi, the pasta portions wont be that big but normally restaurants will give you too much pasta so I'd say try to leave a third of it behind. I've also been told a good tip is to look up the restaurant's website beforehand so you already know what you're going to eat and won't have to panic when you're there-but so far, haven't bothered to this myself! I also use a food diary every day-if you write down what you eat, you just wont eat as much because most people don't realise how much they're really eating anyway. If you do overdo it a bit, I would up the exercise for the next week to make up for it.
