"The country plans to transition to digital TV in 2012, freeing up more spectrum when that move takes place, said Jim Connolly, radio spectrum advisor to ComReg. The company was going to take back the spectrum at the end of the year, but now is considering pushing it up to the beginning of 2012."

As it happens I met this journo last week, she was over on a govt-sponsored trip here. She seemed pretty sound. This doesn't make it official but it's interesting nonetheless... or was this info known already?

    http://www.digitaltelevision.ie/National+DTT/DTT+Rollout.htm

This is the Department of Communications site regarding DTT.

It is expected that RTÉ will launch DTT services to the viewing public on a phased basis in 2010.

RTÉ Networks Limited (RTÉNL) has started a test DTT service from Three Rock and Clermont Carn.
It is expected that RTÉ will launch DTT services to the viewing public on a phased basis in 2010.
Will this before before or after that website gets its next update ?

As far as I recall it originally gave 2009 as a launch date. Yes the site is not updated much.

I've emailed em before on typos and they've correct them. I have pointed out an error regarding South Coast giving impression that subscription platforms are the only options for receiving UK channels, which is not the case, though the say elsewhere that Free to air satellite is received here. On the other hand, we accidently receive free-to-air signals which we don't pay for so perhaps technically the Dept. have a right not to mention FTA satellite. 2010 reflects the new timetable if Onevision go ahead. I wonder is the hold up on Onevision to do with Eircom's change of ownership scheduled for the 1st week in January? That's within 2 months. May Eircom be seeking direction from the new owner and waiting on sign off while signing off on remaining issues. I'd say there should be some decision in January from Eircom and word from the BAI, I wouldn't expect to hear anything this or next month. That's my own feeling. I would say Onevision are I'm sure negiotating hard for the best deal from RTÈ NL & the BAI. Obviously RTÉ NL will know how UPC feel should Onevision pull out and can thus calibrate their approach. Again I've got no inside. I just read what everyone else reads, the fact that's its an expensive project in a challenging market, with the government not in a position to invest much in it. I suspect
given that Eircom & Arquiva upped their stakes rather than bringing in new investors and stalling indicates their appetite is there for the project & their mutterings to the media are a way to just argue a better deal with the BAI & RTÉ. Fingers crossed they sign off. I do think we should have a decision by end of January to sign or not. After that its up to UPC's parent if they don't. I do think the stb's should be DVB-T2 boxes just for compatability & makes it easy for RTÉ to upgrade to it later without change of box for customers. They may decide not, and prefer TVs with CI come out with Freeview HD TVs.

Well all will be known I expect in January with STT taking a view whether to proceed to signing or calling a halt. Of course hard to know what Arquiva would do, would they go ahead themselves?
