Passport Advice - Renewing

Ok i might make this sound more complicated than it actually is but here it goes.

My girlfriend has a current irish passport, according to her mother she had an awful time actually applying for one the last time etc. She was born in the UK but moved here when she was around 5 or 6'ish. She has had an Irish Passport for years and years now so she obviously has irish citizenship through her grandparents or however that works since they are irish.

Right now her passport is up in june of next year, and she wants to renew it, but when she first came here her last name was changed from her fathers back to her mothers maiden name after her parents split. Could anyone offer advice on how she would re-apply, as she is wrecking my head about not knowing what exactly to do and having to send off her birth cert with proof that she changed her name and everything (apparently she doesnt have her name change document anymore as it was lost in a fire). She has an application form but according to her the listed citizenship section doesnt apply to her and she doesnt know what to tick

Im not sure why she's making it sound so complicated as she has a valid irish passport right now, i honestly cant see the big deal in renewing it without any hassle.

THis is somewhat unrelated but I was also told when she wanted to get her birth cert replaced years ago after it was lost in the fire she had to go back to the uk in person to get a new birth cert because her name was changed. Would i be right in saying that since all i have to do to get a replacement brith cert is send off in the mail. Is that all she should have had to do in the first place? or if it has to be posted within the uk she could have had her application forwarded through her grandmothers address in the uk?

    Thanks, Really appreciate any advice.

even though she had her name changed? the correct name is on her current passport but when she shows her birth cert to the gardai for verification it will show her father last name, not her current last name.

    thanks very much

Is there not an explanatory note about the name on the notes page of the passport? I've seen that on a friends where his name was spelt incorrectly on his birth cert.

I have just found that on the site, its says if the name differs, proof of usage for the new last name for 2 years is required via bank statements, driving license etc. Thanks

i have just been informed that when her mother re applied for her passport, sending in her old passport wasnt enough, she was told she needed to send her parents birth cert as well to prove that her parents were irish.

I think is ridiculous that if you already have an irish passport issued by this governemnt that should already be proof enough of citizenship as you would have had to prove it previously in order to get the passport in the first place  is it that they have difficulty ascertaining the validity of a passport they issued in the first place or something

Well, the first and most important thing is to start dealing with this now. I would send in the bare-bones application to begin with, and if they seek extra documentation, get it for them as they need it.

At the end of the day, the passport office is entitled to ask for whatever supporting documentation they think they need. If they want to check everything again, they are entitled to do that. There is really no point in arguing with them.

The underlying issue is that the process for issuing passports seems to have become a lot more thorough and careful in the last ten years.

It might take a few months to sort everything out, but since there's no rush, there should be no problem.
