Acting as Guarantor for visa application

hi, I have a friend who is applying for a 6 month tourist visa for the uk. they have asked me, as a british passport holder, to write a letter of reference, plus they need a copy of my passport. I'm just a bit concerned as to what I could potentially be responsible for? Maybe I am being over cautious but if anything went wrong/ they got into trouble, would I have to provide financial assistance as I recommended them to get the visa in the first place? I have a link to the application process, I just wondered if anyone had experience doing this and if it should be undertaken lightly.
    Thanks for any help

I am not certain of the exact terms but you are taking a considerable risk. Being a guarantor is not to be taken lightly. You will be responsible if it turns out that person does not have the money to leave the country; maybe even if they get sick and turn out to have no insurance. If you have any doubt, do not become a guarantor.
