    Hey guys.

Can anybody tell me if it's ok for a car to fail the nct because there is oil weeping from the engine ?

It's actually an old leak but i did'nt do a good enough job on cleaning off the oil when the problem was repaired.

This is what the tester told me anyway.
I told him it was an old leak but he insisted a " drop " of oil hit him whilst he tested the car.

    IT'S NOT LEAKING !

I thought you could not fail because of an oil leak . How is that a safety item?

    Yes. I agree
    I dont get it
They say "safer cleaner driving" as there slogan.

An old oil leak on the block is just crazy imo

    It's a joke

Its in the test manual that 'Leaking oil found to be continually dropping' is a reason to fail (p79).
Bad form of an inspector to fail on an oil leak if it's not pi$$ing out I'd say.

Can anybody suggest a good quality product for getting off the grimey caked on oil thats welded to the block ?

Would petrol do the job ?

Manual is available on www.ncts.ie but it looks to be down at the moment. Check again in the morning I'd say.

No don't put petrol on it to dangerous. Go to a local motor factors they will have some. Put it on for a while then power hose the engine avoiding any electrics

Gunk engine degreaser. Halfords. Small tin for about a tenner. Does a good job. Look for the 'green' tin - It's safer and water based, but does a cracking good job all the same. You can stick it on with an old dish brush and then just hose it off with the garden hose, or head down to your local garage and blow it off there with the jetwash.

In terms of the safety threat you should ride a motorbike and then you'll know why oil leaks on cars, even small ones that only drip once in a while, are a serious hazard....

Most bikers will know someone who's come off their bike due to oil on the roads at some stage, and I'm not talking about the post dry weather slick - I mean oil leaking from a car/van/truck. 4x4's and trucks are the worst for it....

If the tester said it dripped, it probably did.

    Cheerio,

    Gil

The link to the nct manual is in the charter. There's lots of other useful information and links in there. If only people would read the charter before posting here ;)

BTW : how did you fix the oil leak in the first place ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 491 ✭✭woody33

I think spilled diesel especially on roundabouts is a greater hazard than the odd oil drip. Still, thanks for the heads up, OP.

    Ok. thank's for the advice.
As you can see from my post count im kinda new to boards , Which i love to read by the way.
I thought my question would merit a thread were people could read this and offer an opinion on the topic.
Other people could read this and maybe learn from my mistake.
Thought that was the point of boards.ie ?
    NOW YE'RE TALKIN;);)

There was a small leak coming from the sump bung which was fixed. I just didn't get around to cleaning it up correctly.
It splattered oil around the underside.
I picked up some engine degreaser the other day and it worked a treat so fingers crossed , that will satisfy the tester!!

If it really is only an old oil leak from something that's been fixed, sounds like a pretty useless tester to me if he couldn't see that. If your levels are ok, and it's not p!ssing on the floor, it sounds like another one of their subjective fails that you've fallen foul of. Most likely situation is that it was just a bit of dirty water - not unlikely with all the rain we've been having.

I had an NCT yesterday and the tester sighted the same problem as the OP here and failed me.. He said there was oil leaking from my Engine - But i only got my engine rebuilt 10 weeks ago so i am hoping it is oil from the time they rebuilt the engine..

I got a 6 month guarantee so i assume i will be covered? Is there a chance i am not covered? ie can the Mechanic say it is not and engine problem and try to charge me?

    Cheers,
    ST

    ....for everyone doing the nct.

I hate the way those .......leeches..... try and get an extra 50 euros out of people at every hands turn.

Is there any way to appeal their decisions?

Yes there is, if you want to pursue it through the district courts that is.

Never mind the oil, far worse is a diesel spill on a corner or a roundabout, especially in the wet!!!
There was a spill yesterday from Barndarrig all the way to Kilpedder on the N11, covering most of the northbound lane on the single lane roads, and the inside lane of the dual carriageway.
Made for an interesting ride to work, I can tell you!!!!!

I'd have imagined a bad oil leak might send fluid flying onto the brakes, with potentially disastrous results.

On one occasion my car failed the NCT for an empty washer bottle,,,,

On another occasion they failed the car for headlight alignment,,,took the car away and done nothing whatsoever with the lights.

It passed the very next day with a thumbs up from the tester.
